I'm looking for a place to go get away for a few days and do some fishing between 9/23 and 10/6. I'd drive up to 6 hours from the North Bay.
Main contenders right now are Shelter Cove, Trinity River, Half Moon Bay or Santa Cruz area.
Any recs or intel would be highly appreciated!

I’d cross out HMB and Santa Cruz and add Big Sur and and Sonoma coast. Shelter cove, Big Sur, Sonoma all good pick the best weather report and go!

Head north. What are you thinking you'd like to target? Shelter cove is a magical place, only downside is at the time of your trip the north pac could be waking up, but the cove is by far one of my favorite places for a fishing trip.

I'm looking to target something out of the ordinary-no halibut! (unless it's Pac Hali). Sonoma Coast is out, because that's not a getaway for me. I've never been freshwater fishing....

Since you have not done freshwater, I would do the eastern Sierras.  June lake, Mammoth lakes area, Virginia lake, etc.  if camping, reasonable campgrounds.

I think the trip will end up being some kind of Albion-Shelter Cove-Humboldt mushrooms-Trinity River type of dealie.

Having never hit the river, any input is welcome. I plan on bringing spinning and fly gear (which I also have never done). I'm not expecting much, but refusing to be intimidated and I'll just try and enjoy myself

I took a week and did this area for the first time about a month ago, suck at freshwater but still got a couple fish dragging a fly behind a cast a bubble at Lake Mary. Really epic spot and you can camp at 9,500'!

Pretty much left the kayak on land.....
