Some are 1/4 inch and some are 5/16 thick. There are lots of choices with different prices,sizes and quantity. Here are a few examples. I also saw some 8 ft but the shipping was very high.

I have a couple of home made flags. I use a 1/4 inch fiberglass rod from TAP Plastics for $3.20.   
WARNING: Secure or add floatation because a flag with this rod will SINK.   Its happened to me.

Received two samples: One Orange and One Custom Order (Photos Below)
Plan to set these flags at my balcony for the next two weeks to test for the color fade.
