I'm surprised you found adequate space underneath for the spare.  My generator is mounted in the only open space under the van.  I would like to eliminate the "continental kit" too but I don't see a way to do it.  My Roadtrek is much older and it's on a Chevy chassis, not a Sprinter.

The newer  "generators" actually run off a secondary serpentine belt from the main diesel engine. You can actually set up the system to automatically start up to five times and recharge the batteries even if you are not near the "van". The main diesel is so quiet it makes sense to me.  Plus no maintenance for a separate generator.

That generator setup sounds great.  My Roadtrek is a 2004. Lots of new technology since then.  I don't use my generator very often.  It gets an annual oil change with Redline synthetic oil and I run it about a half hour every month.  I'm not able to make it to Shelter Cove.  It would be fun to look and compare the Roadtreks.

Although we don't enjoy the great gas mileage nor the quietness of a new generator, we do enjoy the roominess and the bad ass factor of our 32 year old motor home.
You can pick these up on the cheap and if you are handy can trick it out the way you want.
This is a 20' motor home. Everything works and has all the creature comforts of home.

A great way to buy on the cheap, as long as it hasn't been allowed to leak.
