I use my SS every trip out.  Saw 2 sharks in SC, but they stayed away and were juveniles soaking up the sun.  Have had some mackerel on the sabiki get briefly tangled in the SS coil, but not a bid deal. All the other fish have been problem free. May buy one more as it lasts about 5 hours. Freedom 7. But no complaints and it is a comfort knowing it’s there 👍.
We're gonna need a bigger boat!

yeah, no problems with halibut & other groundfish getting tangled in the lead, but sabikis are another story.
trolling the lead is always trailing so doesn't cause me problems, though on drift with a hot fish like a salmon close to the boat it seems like it might...still using my SS everytime out though.

apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, i couldn't find it.

...but i imagine the SS would shock the hell out of me if i just tried to pull it up...

The shock isn't bad.  It's not like a big bug zapper or stun gun.... it just makes your arm tingle and muscles pulse.   I'm dumb and have mistakenly grabbed mine a few times thinking it was loose gear.  The field it creates just makes the sharks uncomfortable (maybe feel some pain since they're so much more sensitive  :smt102), so they lose their curiosity and leave you alone.

Ash got me one with the group buy last year for Christmas (I think with Skylar she realized that she needs me for awhile... :smt002).

I finally used it last two trips to Pacifica and able to get a salmon limit both times (over doz salmon to the yak), so safe to say okay for salmon?
One fish got tangled around the downrigger & SS but somehow stayed on.

After 15yrs of kayak fishing in the Ocean, I've not yet to seen one & would like to keep it that way... :smt004

I’ve seen a bunch of them over the years but I think it’s the ones you cant see you probably need to worry about

Not trying to be a dissident here but I remain skeptical about the SSs especially if one comes at a yak with any speed

Maybe my skepticism will cost me something  :cowboy_smoke:

There is no way that a shark shield will stop a shark charging at speed. But, the evidence is pretty good that it does reduce the chance of charging taking place before it happens.

This is part of the "Discussion" section in the research article at :
https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0062730

The electric field did not affect the proportion of static baits consumed, but significantly decreased the number of breaches, and surface interactions on a towed seal decoy. While the differences observed could be due to location or the different white shark populations [46], it is more likely related to the behavioural states being tested and associated energetic costs. Since rapid swimming is necessary to leave the water, the energy required for a breach is higher than that expended during inquisitive behaviour [47]. Considering the energetic cost of breaching, white sharks might be less likely to breach if they can sense any factor that could reduce their chance of being successful or which appears different to natural situations. On the other hand, a white shark might still be inquisitive around a static bait, regardless of the electric field because such approach requires similar energy expenditure to normal swimming.

It seems to me that what they saying is that a shark is not going to expend the energy to charge a "towed decoy" (which is a pretty close analog of a kayak) if something doesn't look quite right. The evidence that the electric pulse from the SS is enough to make it look "not quite right" can be found in Table 4 of the same paper---there were 0 breaches with SS on (vs 16 with SS off) and only 2 "surface interactions" with SS on (vs 27 with it off). Those kind of numbers don't happen by chance...
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Not trying to dissuade anyone from using SSs   If a shark breaches on my yak what will be will be

For salmon fishermen and divers furbags are more likely to be a factor

Yesterday had my son and his buddies surfing and fish (probably stripers) were pushing bait along the beach break, furbags popping up all over right in where the boys were surfing

The boys kept going toward them and I had to keep telling them stay away they’re not dogs you can trust The place was thick with pelicans and a big bull sea lion popped up next the boys and started ripping up a pelican and swallowing big pieces with blood and guts flying everywhere

The seagulls started swooping in for free food and the furbag snatched one of them and ate it almost whole then finished the pelican

All over in the space of a few minutes

Pretty sure from now on I won’t have to talk to them about furbags

For a while I was carrying a flare gun for the furbags, too many things to carry if youre going to worry about everything

Just buy one Shark Sheild...............wife doesn't need one.

The batteries are the most expensive component in the SS unit. So what I did was buy Two SS and one battery. My wife thinks she has the newer and lighter 2019 model.
