Newbie Kayak Fisherman Looking to Learn

Hi, I'm Dewayne. I've been fishing maybe a total of 10 times as an adult and have only caught very tiny fish, but have been an avid boater for much longer. I'm interested in learning about fishing. I am an equipment junkie so I tend to over analyze things and end up getting more than I actually need. Right now I have a Hobie Adventure Island kayak, but barely any fishing gear. Looking to get outfitted and learn to catch some fish. I'm mostly interested in eating what I catch rather than sport fishing.

Start with a simple setup and you can upgrade as you learn more.  YouTube is one of the best places to learn about basic fishing equipment.  You might want to start with rockfishing and move to halibuts, salmon, striper, and other species. 
Most of the members are eager to share their knowledge.

I suppose it really depends of what side of the water you are fishing on. For salt, you can't go wrong with a Trevala 7.0 ML and i love the Avet reels.
They are a solid American made reel.  I've only had to do one maintenance on my reel over 3-4 years, and it runs just as smooth as the day i opened it.

If I could do it all over again it would be this setup and don't spend another penny...over time, you may add according to your addiction, but for now, inject yourself with this...run you about 400$ all together if I'm not mistaken...time to catch bigger fish...he says to himself...welcome...

to +1 a little bit, the Trevala, and the Avet reels (the MXL, MXJ, SXJ for example are all excellent reels) are very light, and very strong.

I'm also new to ocean kayak fishing and would love to go soon. Is there any interested in going soon? I have a proangler 12.

Post a HKUP and see who bites...study that wind and swell and direction you want to fish regarding the tide and pick a fishy spot, worst case, you got out and learned a ton...might fish quickly at paradise on Thursday....

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice! I'm planning to go to this Hali-Striper day on Saturday the 24th of this month as a day trip. Looking forward to meeting many of you there.
