My girlfriend and I each have Hobie sit on tops. She's got a four year old boy and I have a 8 year old daughter that like to go out with us once in a while. While having the kids sit in our laps works for a little while, it really cuts down on  our paddling having to reach over the top of the kids.

My girlfriend asked if there were seats we could install on the front of the kayak. What I have pictured it a Johnny Bar across the front to that the paddler can put their feet on the outside for added stability and then some sort of seat that will bolt onto the middle of the bar, maybe something like the seats that attach to the back of a bicycle.

Does such a thing exist? Does anyone have a bar or seat that you could picture this working with? I'm not asking anyone to give them too me, just wondering about brand names and connection descriptions.

Thanks!

Not sure which Hobie you have, but I would think putting them right behind you, back to back, would work out fine.  Then all you would need is a inflatable cushion or something for them to sit on.  Granted they aren't facing forward, but it seems to be an easy safe solution.

It might be a little work but I think you'd be able to customize a Malibu Kayaks gator hatch to fit your yaks.

I don't know about the Malibu Hatch on a Hobie because they leak like crazy on the Malibu that they where made for. Unless your an expert Fabricator I would pass on this.(Just my personal opinion Bryce).
I have the Sport and the Revolution and my girls who are 13 and 15 are in the over 100lb arena and fit in the back well of the sport/revolution.
We we're self rescuing at Del Valle when I found that they could be paddled around fairly easily putting over 300lbs of weight on the Kayaks.
Firm believer in K.I.S.S. with the way my kids have grown I think tweaking the Yaks would be better saved for their own Yaks later on then modifying your Yaks and regretting not being able to use it for it's original use and purpose.
Just put them in some quality PFD's would suffice then sit them in the wells and let the memories start. :)

I actually meant strap this over the existing hatch not replacing it. I think we've got the same idea though, keep it simple and functional.

Thanks for the responses guys. After wracking my brain I was able to come up with a really simple solution when I actually walked out and looked at my kayaks:

I think that if I installed some eyelets in choice places I could get a seat up front but this seems to work for now.
