recently started binging a bunch of fishing shows and noticed that damn near all are using spinning gear in the ocean. Is there a reason other than the reel manufacturers of America telling me I need to spend more? If you're an ocean spin enthusiast, got a favorite combo?

What's to know?  Any spinning reel sized for the fish you hope to catch will work.  Where they fall down is when folks want a line counter.

I liked Shimano reels until the company decided to remove the anti-reverse lever that allows the reel to run backwards.  Slowly releasing line if you can't back-reel was too complicated.  Same is true for Penn reels, which are also great reels, because they, too, lack an anti-reverse lever.

I changed to Daiwa reels and was happy with them until I picked up a fly rod and never looked back.

For the most part - and this is not universally true nor meant to be a universal truth - spinning rods tend to be more limber than similar casting rods and that made it more fun in my mind.  Also, if you watch enough YouTube videos, many big-game setups are spinning rods and reels.

There are folks who consistently catch lingcod and Pacific halibut on toy Barbie rods.  Sometimes I think there's way too much emphasis being placed on needing high-end gear to catch fish (and this most definitely includes $$$$ fly rods and reels).

I started buying conventional reels on EBay (Penn Long Beach, Jigmaster, TLD-5, Tritons, etc).  Less bearings to rust, the better. Spinning gear for me was a hassle when I dunked the reels.

I like bait casting reels for their "low profile" and better drag performance (generally speaking).

Try spinning gear for yellowtail. Just don't wind while the fish is peeling line.

I've got a MH ugly stick with a big Penn spinner on it I keep meaning to try out as a bait rig. The rod action has a really soft tip that I think would be good for halibut or WSB baitfishing.
I may dig it out and give it a try!

I used the Stella 8000 and 10000 on my last Tuna trip and they're great.
