Sean and I hooked-up at 0530 hours in Ukiah and headed to Fort Bragg to try and hook-up with a salmon. We paddled out from Noyo Harbor at about 0700 hours and were out with the fleet (2 miles out) in about 20 minutes. We dropped our watermelon Apex's in and trolled for a while. Sean hooked-up up with something, but we both decided that whatever he hook-up with was knocked off by a power boater as he trolled over Sean's line.

While we were out, we heard talk of pilot whales. Next thing we know they're cruising by us. I took a short video with my camera.

If you're in the Fort Bragg area, listen to channel 10 on your radio, that's the PB channel. We also heard they were catching tuna (albacore) 45 miles off Fort Bragg and 20 miles off Shelter Cove.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say...the water and weather was fantastic!

The pilots followed the garbage scowl. Go figure! Someone said they had been there a week.

Good stuff Mahi.  Must have been pretty cool to see those things so close by.

Better luck on the salmon on the next outing.

Great report. My girlfriend and I put the kayaks on the truck and planned on fishing Thursday after work but it was taking too long to find all the fishing gear so we opted for just a river paddle instead. We went up Big River and saw several dungeonous crabs running along the bottom and even swimming upside down on the surface with their legs kicking out of the water. I can't wait to get out by the buoys.

Hey Dan, good to know you guys got out and made a go of it. It sucks hearing about Sean getting cut off by a PB. Those guys treat yakers with no respect! They treat you like you're not there.
I was out friday in a powerboat. We got one fish on the first drop before 7 AM. The next 4 hours was spent listening to the downrigger wires humming. No more salmon love.
We also spent a couple hours rockcodding, (a verb?), and the whole time I wished I was in my yak because it was so calm.
Fish-on.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

So why didn't you guys go for tuna????? :smt044

That footage was great!! I am so hopeful that one of the few times I am on the big blue with weather like that I can see a whale cruise by. It is at the top of my kayaking wish list.
Sorry to hear about the PB cutting Sean off. Probably jealous to see us out fish them. Why else would they show such a lack of respect?
Next time fellas; next time.

Wow... looked nice out there.  I need to hit Fort Bragg or Shelter Cove one of these days.  I've never been to either.
