Newbie advice needed :smt010

I'm looking to respool my baitcaster (rod is a MH 7ft) and my spinning reel (Size 30 and rod is a M 6.6).  I fish in freshwater.

Am I better off spooling both with flouro as I am usually fishing lakes and not throwing into heavy cover or should I go one with braid , both with braid? tie a flouro leader on the braid?  I typically use the spinning rod for my plastics and my baitcaster for my crankbaits.  I can't afford to buy more reels so they have to work as a multi-purpose set up. Any advice on brand, type etc as searching through the internet can be mind numbing to say the least.

Finally; I want to keep the cost to no more than $25 per spool if I go flouro.

hopefully someone doesn't mind giving their $0.02   :smt012

lol, I started writing a response and then started thinking about all the variables that would come into play and there’s gonna be a bunch of trade-offs no matter which direction you go.

For all around do everything rigs:

I’d say 12-15lb floro on the baitcaster.  If it’s not a glass blend cranking rod just remember not to horse them in.....but you’re still liable to lose fish on the head shake or jump.  I like the floro sink factor with crankbaits, they get to running depth faster and they contribute to a slow rise on the stop and go.  There’s the added bonus that the low stretch will still give you some decent setting power if you throw jigs, worms or frogs.  About the only place it will suck is open water top water presentations.

I’d go 8-10lb floro on the spinning rod. Same deal; low stretch, less visibility, sinks.  It is stiffer and has a tendency to jump off the spool so you gotta keep it taught or suffer the consequences lol.

If it’s stained water I like spectra straight tied, in the 2-4lb diameter.  Especially when throwing wacky presentations.  The spectra helps slow the descent and you really get a nice wiggle from a good 6” senk.

I actually keep two rods for a senko, one floro and one spectra.  I fish the spectra in heavy cover, stained water, slow current.   If I’m in fast current, clear water, shaky head I prefer the floro.

I’ve been using sunline  sniper floro and old fashion spiderwire for the spectra.  Never was a fan of short top shots.  I retie often and hate having to replace shots on the water.

Only problem I’ve really had with floro is I replace at least twice a season.  I get more mileage if I back the reels with spectra and spool up about 100 yards of floro on top.

My dos centavos.

I am no means an expert but my $0.02.

I like to crank in the delta.  I use 14lb fluorocarbon on casting rod (M 6'6" casting rod).

It could be that I use crappy fluoro, but I don't like the memory loops on spinning rod.  I would put 20lb braid on spinning reel.  (I have 10lb braid on spinning reel and it's like thread.  I hate it in the wind).  If I feel the need, I tie on 5-6' of mono or fluoro as a leader.

Bass pro has 50% offer on powerpro right now...

Thumbs up on ex-kayaker suggestion of backing with braid then tying your fluoro or mono.  Braid will likely never need to be replaced and you can save a little money getting fresh, low volume spools of fluoro when you want to respool.  I did this on my baitcaster.

Just for spinning rods - I don't use baitcasting reels - I start with 30-40 yards of 12# Maxima Chameleon then fill the spool with 15#-20# braid and end with barrel swivel to a Seaguar STS fluorocarbon leader.

Don't use PowerPro - it floats in the wind more than any other braid I've ever used.  Use a braid with a circular cross-section.

With all the advantages of braided lines, I thought the days of spooling with mono (or fluorocarbon) were in the past.  Live and learn, I guess.

Just curious if you like Sufix 832. That's my favorite...

I save it for power fishing techniques  where it excels.  I don’t like it for cranking due to its tendency to straighten hooks or pull em out when fish are lightly hooked. Plus you have a very visible line going directly to your bait, if you’re using a top shot the knots going through guides is a pita with micro guides. Spectra is a tool like everything else, not a be all end all.

You will get many opinions, and here is mine...

I use sunline supernatural mono for cranking and wacky rigged stick worms. I also use it to top shot my braid set ups.

I use vicious no fade braid because it doesn’t fade like every other braid I’ve ever used. It doesn’t make a mess of your reels or leave your fingers dyed.

I’m not a fan of flouro as a mainline. I use it as a top shot and one one baitcaster. Flouro is more dense than mono so it has more sensitivity but don’t buy off 100% on the “less stretch”. Do some research first.

Also I suggest buying your line by diameter and not lb test

Braided Lines:

Braided line is more durable than mono.

Depends on what is meant by "durable". Abrasion resistance is not a strength of braid.

thank you for all of your advice.  NCKA is the best  :smt006

Sounds like I will be best to go with flouro on my baitcaster (14lb or so) and braid (20lb/30lb?) on my spinning rod with a flouro leader.

so now I see your point about how diameter matters.   :smt005
