Hello NCKA! I saw a kayaker pull out two lingcod in 20 minutes at Rodeo beach and thought that looked like fun.

I now have a fishing gear for rockfish, 11ft hobie mirage drive and am pending a guided trip by CalKayak.com. I'm looking for other SF locals to safely kayak fish with. I haven't been able to lock down a date for the guided kayak fishing in HMB to safely learn the basics.  If you're game to teach a newbie I'm open ears and happy to pay it forward.

I'm especially interested in ocean fishing some tasty fish like lingcod.

Cheers

If you want to learn a lot, I mean a lot. Check out Loleta Eric he is in Shelter Cove or as I call it fishermans haven. If you get schedule let me know. Im due for a drive at the Cove. We also have bushy in San Cruz area.

Caught these browns, chinas, blacks & gophers last Saturday with my grandson at Lovers Point in Monterey on top of the kelp beds. Limits for 2 from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. No cabbies or lings though.

If these RF's suits your taste, I can show you more details at your request. Cannot pedal your yak so you have to use the paddle. Need to grab those kelp branches and secure them with your feet so you stay in 1 place. One secret to not getting snag. Very short distance from shore.
Going Fishing?
Winds from the south, hook in
    the mouth.
Wind from the east, bite the least.
Wind from the north, further off.
Wind from the west, bite the
    best.

The guy who goes by "Bushy" on this forum guides in Santa Cruz. He'll teach you how to safely catch rockfish and lingcod, and right now there is a decent chance at a halibut...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

Looking for rockfish on your 11-foot Hobie?  Check under the seat, sometimes they slide up there LOL.

On that's right you gotta catch them first. I believe there's a link for contacting Santa Cruz Kayak Fishing below.

(I keep that stuff separate from NCKA as much as I can)

Hello! I am willing to meet up in the SF area to go out. Yes, I completely agree that if you want to book a guide I would definitely recommend Bushy in Santa Cruz. Let me know if you want to meet up!

There are lot more safer places to catch rockfish than Rodeo Beach. Isn’t that the beach by the Marin Headlands. I have been out in that area in a boat and a beach launch seems kinda treacherous and dangerous. Also, do you have a Fishfinder on your kayak?
Looking for underwater structure is crucial for finding rockfish habitat.
I have heard that rockfishing at HMB has improved since it pretty much collapsed a few years ago. It is one of the easiest and safest place to fish, but if you haven’t fished there before see if you can go with someone who knows the area. There are some shallow outer reefs that can sneak up on you.
There’s a shitload of NCKAer’s fishing every weekend almost everywhere. See if you can hook up on NCKA. Also, it may be encouraging for you to hear that rockfish are not finicky eaters. They will mostly gobble down anything you dangle in front of them.
Hope you haul some in soon!!
Aloha,

Oh, by the way if you want to learn how to catch Stripers and Hali’s in the Bay, come the Frank J. Miller Memorial Hali-Striper Day/weekend on August 24th at the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor in Richmond. My original post has all the information on the Forum: Fishing Tournaments and Events.

Monterey Bay Kayaks in Monterey is offering a free kayak rescue clinic. Check out the thread that Adam started.
