So I’m getting up there in age. But I still want to go for long runs down the ship channel (10-15 miles). So I’m going to put a trolling motor on my Native Titen Propel.
My question is do I need to register it as a power boat and do I need a boat licenses?
Thanks
Keith

Yes, you are supposed to register it but it is pretty easy to do. If you haven’t decided on a motor yet take a look at Bixby and Torqeedo they are both designed for kayaks. There is a Torqeedo Ultralight Facebook page with tons of information. You do not need an operators license as long as you are not taking passengers for hire.

I wanted to be able to troll for salmon this year with out being worn out paddling, so I installed the Torqeedo on my Eddyline, and I’m quite happy with it even though I haven’t been out for salmon yet.

Really? Is this something that changed recently? Growing up I was of the understanding that electric trolling motor does not have registration req.

The motor does not need to be registered but any boat with a motor does need to be registered. It’s clear on the DMV website.

It’s fairly inexpensive depending on who helps you. One time I was charged sales tax as though it was a new purchase. Next time they didn’t. I went with an install where I could reach the motor in case I wrap something around the prop. Lithium batteries, digital controller battery saver and a water snake motor.

Yes, I registered my Hobie Oasis after I purchased Bixpy Jet Motor.
I heard a story that one person was using a trolling motor without the kayak being registered and got a huge fine.

Just another shout out for the Watersnake motor.  Very nice light weight package, easy to adapt and way cheaper than the specialized kayak motors.
