welcome to NCKA.  Try before you buy.  You can rent yaks at Lake Natoma or you can call Headwaters Kayak in Lodi and drive to Lodi lake and test paddle some yaks there.  I would say that Headwaters is your best bet because they know their stuff, and will no pressure guide you to a few that fit your budget and what you want to do with your yak.

Lodi is actually less than an hours drive from Roseville (depending on day and time )  Well worth the time and gas IMHO.
