Went to Markley Cove on Berryessa to bass fish from my kayak today. It was slow but...

They were going to charge me $25.00 to launch, however, as I’m a senior the price was reduced to $20.00.  This is the most I’ve been charged anywhere to launch my kayak (I use a trailer but wherever I go i still get the kayak rate. I was just at King Island and they charged half the boat rate which ended up being $7.50).

Twenty dollars is too much I can’t go back.  To be fair to them the bathrooms were clean and the ramp was well maintained. But... not worth $20.00 to me.

Does the NCKA community consider 20 or 25 dollars for a launch fee pretty high - or am I out of touch on this?

I launch my kayaks at Steele canyon from the roof rack it's something like 8$.  If I use my trailer it might be 23$. (What it costs to launch jet skis).

No, you're not out of touch. That's pretty absurd !  :smt011

As was suggested, hit up Steele Canyon next time.

Capel and Oak shores are free last I heard, but there is now a pay machine at Capel that may or may not be in use. I believe Oak shores will get the same machine if not already there.

There are plenty of spots around the lake, Markley Cove included, that have easy access from the road for a kayak.  The downside is parking your vehicle alongside the road and being subject to theft.

Years ago and dirt poor I used to launch an aluminum boat about half way between the dam and Markley Cove.  Lowering it down to the lake was easy enough.  I used the winch on an old Scout to bring it back up   :smt003

That's stupid high, IMO, even worse than the EBMUD lakes that I won't go to because their fees are too high.

It’s $17 to launch from a trailer at the Santa Cruz harbor, and that seems like a ripoff to me. But, I pay it because it’s close and convenient, and I’d rather be on the water than driving.

To launch at Lexington it’s $5 to launch and $4 inspection fee (or $9 and $7 for CF vessels—trailer or no makes no difference). Then it’s another $5 (I think) to park, but I park along the road (even with the trailer for my AI) since I only go on weekdays. So if I actually registered my AI (like I’m supposed to) and parked in the lot (like I’m probably supposed to), it would cost $21. That’s kind is absurd, IMHO.

You run the risk of getting anything not tied down stolen from capel cove (free launch).  I haven't gone there in years for that reason.  I was out skiing and I came back some guy was looking at my gas cans and cooler,. He asked me if that was my stuff.  I told him yes,. He jumped in his car and drove off.  Damn thieves.

IMO if you’re trailer launching and parking in a designated trailer space there shouldn’t be any reason not to pay full price.  I’d object if I was in a single day use space and just wheeled my yak down a bank.

Maybe it’s just a sign of the times but $20 doesn’t sound so absurd these days.  Especially for a clean facility and the peace of mind knowing that a tweeker isn’t smashing my window to steal a handful of change and my Bon Jovi CD’s.

Exactly I go every Sunday to steel canyon.  I launch jet skis and never have to worry about my stuff on the bank.

Capell, Oak Shores, and Smittle Creek will all be converting to "fee use" areas in the near future.
