I want to do some more underwater photography and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend action cameras that are better under low light conditions. I have a Gopro Hero 3 and a really cheap knockoff. They both work OK down to about 30-40 feet but any deeper than that and there is not enough light.

Anyone know if the newer gopro's are better in low light?

I see some knockoff cameras on Amazon that advertise lower light capabilities, for example:
https://amazon.com/gp/product/B07F6DYF43/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A39KNK24YUL75D&psc=1
I wonder if they are any more sensitive than my old Gopro. Thoughts?

Thanks
John

GoPro 6 and 7 have a low light mode that works well

The 7 is definitely better in low light situations then the 3 in my experience and has the ability to adjust to match those settings. Best bet would be a light attached in the same direction if its that dark.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it would be worth it to upgrade to a new Gopro.

Whatever you choose to upgrade to, I believe it to be a mistake to expect the GoPro cam to give you what you want under all underwater circumstances without the use of an external light source. You can change the image resolution quality but sensitivity changes will be limited, at present, in GoPro type devices. Hopefully, for you, the GoPro 7 will prove me wrong, as I have not had the opportunity for a hands-on experience.

Digital SLRs in a dive housing can expand the exposure capability by manipulating the ISO speed rating...but at some times will also need an external light source.

Totally agreed, tho I’ve nowhere near the knowledge and experience of HJ.  The combination of those two items will offer so much more in saturation, contrast and DOF options/capabilities!
