Scary,  I often turn my back to the water when surf fishing in waders.  I am not going to anymore.

Yes. My point is that if you can drown wearing them on land imagine what could happen if you flipped wearing them in a yak.

Even if you wore a belt the top half would fill up with water.
The longer you’re in the water the water will find a way passed the belt.

I wear neoprene waders when I wear waders, there Hodgeman brand and are tight enough that I can jump off a dock and not get much water in them and comfortable enough to wear in a float tube all day.
The rubber loose waders I’ll  never wear, my wife’s uncle died in a pair in eastern Oregon many years ago when he slipped in the river and fell getting sucked under and got wedged on the bottom. It  took divers a couple hours to recover the body from the force of them filled up. They literally had to cut them off him under water.

When I was a kid, my dad would hammer into me..."Never ever ever turn your back to the ocean".

I recently seen a guy go kayak fishing in wearing sweatpants, a hoodie, and un-belted waders over it. My buddy told him what he was wearing was dangerous. The dude blew him off and acted like he knew more than any of us.

The surf can be unforgiving. I was striper surf fishing once around Pacifica when a kneehigh water rushed me immediately followed by another above my waist. It knocked me down and was under water for a few seconds. The force of water rushing back to the ocean was so strong I had to anchor myself by digging my hands into the sand or I would’ve end up in the ocean. Now that I think about it, Alex (Alien) wearing pfd while perch fishing makes a lot of sense.

If no one was around, how did they know he turned his back to the ocean?

Regardless, so sad and unfortunate.

Terrible that this happened. South Beach is no joke makes me nervous just trying to have a family picnic there.

I have considered buying waders for shore fishing, possibly at Point Reyes. Have see neoprene and it is the same material as my wetsuit, would it be safer?

Also seeing more people on the bay kayak fishing for halibut in shorts and flip-flops (if your reading this you know who you are (Kevin  :smt006 :smt001)). Some of these guys are really good fisherman.... come on folks gear up for the conditions and be safe!

**** a bunch of that.
