If one of you who has never fished Bodega before comes up here and ends up at the weigh in with a ling, rockfish, and a halibut then I'm retiring from kayak fishing....lol.   :smt003

I'll be targeting just those spiecies you mentioned, except for the butt.....Someone!!! Dustin will be giving his yak away after this event, so save room for it!! :smt003
count me in and I think i'll drag the wife up there too!She can comb the beaches and help out with the other stuff (thats my IDEA) not hers.

I made a quick Google "My Maps" for some of the Sonoma County fishing spots and the fish you're likely to catch at each.  The pointers are just general locations and not specific GPS points so don't use them for navigation in anyway.   Here's the link.

Included on these maps is a very rough outline of Sonoma County as well as the two no-take marine reserves currently in the area.  Jim's place and the Bodega Marine Lab are also listed for reference.  By the way, the lab has public tours Friday afternoons from 2-4pm if anyone shows up early and wants to see the lab.

If anyone has a fishing spot they'd like to see added to the map let me know.

Your map is awesome! Thanks a bunch, Brian. Any good fishing spots on the Russian River?

I plan to come up on Friday so a tour of the lab is now on my agenda! Thanks for the info.

I'd go but my niece is having her graduation family party that Friday night.....can't believe she's going to UC Berkeley  :smt011 ...hope she doesn't turn into a Tree hugger  :smt009 (no offence to any Berkeley Grads out there :smt002)

Thanks Janice,

I've only fished the Russian River in the winter for steelhead (twice) so I know nothing about fishing there in the summer, but maybe Mickfish will be so kind as to share some intel.  I believe you can catch Smallmouth Bass and trout right now, but I don't have any details other than I believe it's a barbless artifical lure fishery in the summer.

Maybe I'll see you at the lab on Friday during your tour.

Awesome map! Thanks for providing it...it'll sure help my somewhat newb self.

By the way, what's the criteria for not having to call myself a newb?  In the Marine Corps you're considered a "boot" until at least your first deployment...at least in my old unit you were.  :smt003

Angel,

That's a good question, and I don't really have a straight answer for you.  For the forum, I suppose you're a newbie until your ranking changes from "smelt" to "sanddab" (or whatever is next).  For kayak fishing in general, I suppose you're a newbie until after your first year on the water kayak fishing.  The exception being that if you're name is "Fishunter", then you're still a newbie in my book until you finally get out on the ocean and catch a lingcod :)

Brian, I'm gonna "shadow" you the whole time i'm out there. Can just give me the secret Hi-sign as to where I might get a ling, rockfish or cab may be hiding.
I need some of that "better fishing through science stuff"
maybe I should be joining the lab tour and gain a bit of science there?! (some may rub-off on to me)

Come to think of it...being a newb isn't so bad.  I get to use that for a reason everytime I go out and don't catch fish.  Kind of like "Sir, the private didn't know"  :smt044

Thanks for the great map!! I am looking for some folks to hook up with for this thing. Decent paddler, new to salt fishing. Weather permitting would like to try for salmon.

According to coastside reports the salmon right now are something like 8 miles from shore in 300' of water.  Hopefully they'll come in closer by the 14th.
