Took the boys mussel harvesting a couple weeks ago. Noah AKA Silent Hunter decided to put together this vid of the harvest and steaming them up along the coast.  :chef:

Enjoy the vid  :smt001

Nice work young man. Now I know how to fix them up when camping on the coast. Thanks!

Those look tasty.  Thanks for the how to video.  I have a question on how to clean them.  Do you soak them to get sand out of them.  Thanks for any tips you can provide.

You can soak them in water or I've even heard of people adding salt and even oats or cornmeal to the water. Something about adding those ingredients makes them filter out the sand.

If I have time I will soak them in water for a few hours. These were not soaked just trimmed and rinsed.

When they steam and open they release the sand and the majority of the sediment is left on the bottom of the pot. We didn't get any sand in any of the mussels but there was definitely some sediment on the bottom of the broth. Since it's heavier than the broth itself it is easily avoidable once it settles on the bottom.

Also it helps not to harvest in a sandy flat area. If there's visible packed sand between the mussels in the area you are harvesting from then you should definitely soak them or move to a less sandy and more rocky environment.

It is important not to add salt to this recipe and the butter used is also unsalted. You will get enough salt from the seawater trapped inside each mussel.
