I wonder how long it took the kayaker to realize that the stern of his kayak was missing?  He kept making unsuccessful attempts to roll up.  Which isn't surprising, as whitewater kayakers learn early in their careers that it is way easier to roll up and paddle away than it is to bail out, swim for shore, and then go through a lot of hassle and drama getting reconnected with the kayak, draining the kayak out, etc.  Plus it's embarrassing to swim, and a kayaker who swims may be expected to drink a beer from a wet suit bootie.  So whitewater kayakers usually make repeated efforts to roll up before they bail out and swim.
