I'm eyeing a trip to Moss Landing for salmon fishing this coming weekend. Are salmon actually in the area? Would you mind sharing some intel? Marine conditions look good, swells are coming down, still a bit early for a good wind forecast.

Would you like to join? PM me if you're interested.

Plan B, in case salmon don't show up, is to go after Petrale Sole. I know of a good spot which was quite productive last year.

Hey Plank,

The intel is in the members only area under 2019 Ocean Salmon reports. Two more posts and you will be able to access that part of the site.

Thanks, Bulldog---Alex, and you're right that you have to go deep to find Petrales. This one was at about 300 feet. In winter they are much deeper than that while in summer they occasionally can be found in less than 100 feet.

I’d be down to try for salmon, or sole, but this weekend looks a little too gnarley out there for me. Hoping you go get um, and get back safe. Looking forward to a report :smt001

At the dock in Santa Cruz yesterday, the fish survey person told me that she was salmon fishing out of ML the day before (Thursday) and there was somebody out there with a kayak just like mine (an AI). I wonder who that was...

Sorry guys, I took my eyes off this thread as I found more information in the members section. I did end up going on the 13th and crossed paths with three other kayaks/ers during the day. All three were motorized which for all practical purposes makes them power boats/ers trolling for salmon with heavy gear like down riggers, things I don't use.

Unless you're lucky and salmon come close to ML this is a big body of water and you'll have to earn it if paddling or peddling. You also have to be extremely careful about marine conditions when planning your trip, otherwise you end up pushing against wind and currents for miles.

I came really close that day, had a very nice takedown which didn't hold too long and later saw a huge salmon following my herring all the way to the kayak. Exciting moment. I immediately dropped the herring back down, the salmon went diving after it, but nothing further happened.

While out in deep water I caught a few flatties for dinner. Altogether I paddled about 20 miles that day.

Hope to connect next time!

You're a rare breed Mr. Plankton.  Enjoy those flatty fillets, you definitely earned them with that paddle.  Around what depth were you finding the flatties at?

About 280 feet, six miles out, towards Mulligan's. It always amazes me when you lower your rig (with octopus strips or similar) to the ocean floor and within seconds something is pulling your line. Mysteries of the deep sea :)

That is impressive all the way around...
