These look like Goose Barnacles.  They're edible but not many people eat them.

"These Goose Barnacles attach to floating stuff on the high seas and depend on wave action to bring food to them. They're seen only when something they're attached to washes up on the shore"

Gooseneck barnacles. Not legal to harvest in California within 1000 feet of the high tide line. Which is where almost all of them are.

Does that mean if they wash up on shore, you can’t take them?

Btw, does anybody know why there is such a regulation? Seems bizarre that you can’t take barnacles, of all things....

Because they aren’t on the list of excepted invertebrates. Crabs clams octopus urchins snails abalone (sigh) are all excepted from the rule against taking animals from tide pools. Nobody thought to ask at the time to exempt barnacles and DFG hasn’t seen fit to do it recently even though they have been asked more than once.

I see them all the time when harvesting mussels and knew that I read somewhere that it was illegal to harvest.

Was watching this vid yesterday and @ 4:10 he is harvesting them for consumption.

I like this guys videos and he is a Bay Area local. If anyone knows him they might want to let him know.

It’s a really stupid prohibition. This is extremely far down on the list of shit I care about. We should be allowed at minimum the 35 per day for invertebrates without a special limit. I’ve also never heard of a game warden enforcing this one. I’d imagine a gross overlimit would attract some attention. ymmv

That's a pretty cool video, especially the "gumboot". According to wikipedia, "The gumboot chiton's appearance has led some tidepoolers to fondly refer to it as the "wandering meatloaf"."

I'm tempted to change my username to "wandering meatloaf"...

Maybe there should be a poll on whose username should be changed and to what.
