Calling all umbrella rig users......What set back do you run while trolling an umbrella rig?  How deep does it run at say 50 feet back?  I've tried the umbrella at the port with no results so apparently I'm doing it wrong.  I appreciate any info anyone can share.  Thanks all.

Depends on the total weight of the rig.  The rig I use for striper trollling, it weighs 5.5oz total and this is what I roughly use to calculate.  You can adjust according to your trolling speed and rig weight.  If you have a really light umbrella rig, you can always clip a banana weight up front.

Every 10ft of line out = 1.5ft down (2.5mph trolling speed)
If you ain't first, you're last.

I'm new to yak fishing but have caught a few keepers at the port/dwc since the start of this month. I have a tackle builders rig and I follow there depth chart.  I let out 70-85 feet of line, i believe at 50 ft (depending on your set up) you should be at 11 feet deep.

Last year Ruben caught a fatty on a dredge rig, which is basically a ultra mega umbrella rig, up in Tomales early March, if my memory serves me correctly...

Never tried it myself, but would be interested to give it a go. So, I'd also be interested if anybody has more details...

Here's one I rigged up last year in a can't afford a dredge rig already have an umbrella rig scenario...the bottom anchovy is 4ft from the top and the lowest 2 hootchees have hooks as well.  Gotta keep moving or its tangleville to da max but I think it has potential...

Umbrella rigs is a great rig that smokeonthewater introduced me to a few years ago. The trick is to have the trailer swim bait following behind the rest of the dummy baits. It works really well in the delta and SLR. Good luck!

Would you use a dropper to feel the bottom and judge depth? If so I wonder how much weight you would need considering the weight of the rig to begin with.

Your weight is on a slider rig or directly to a banana weight.  The amount of weight is based on current, depth you want, and trolling speed.  It gets sticky when you slow down to feel the weight bounce on the bottom and give a couple cranks up to stay off the bottom, I would not bounce ball this rig but only because I paddle.  I would use an eight to ten oz banana unless someone corrects me...that would be for 25 to 40 fow... :smt006

On a 3way with a dropper weight it could be done, I guess I'm tempted also...it does have nice action when it is flowing properly, it does move like a school when you maneuver your rod tip...:smt006
