So it is not exactly a kayak, but it is one of the most common traditional Native California watercraft designs! It was no easy feat, but man was it a fun endeavor! We even made the cordage to lash the tule pontoons!

Is there a pedal drive?
Jk, looks like fun.  How long did it take to make it?
"Pedo Viejo" is what Antonio called me.

Very impressive. Kudos to you. How about sharing some of the construction process, including making the cordage. The canoe would make a fantastic educational tool when kids are learning California history, especially about coastal Indians.

Thanks! It took about three days time. We are archaeologists so we will be presenting these data at an upcoming conference, then publishing the results. Once it is published we will do a full on post with all stages of production and manufacturing methods and times for ya'll. This one is to be donated for teaching purposes, but the next one will be for fishing!

Bamboo, although not native to the area, would definitely be better than a tule rod.  :smt005

Thanks for making the pages of the book 'Pasquala' come to life. When I was teaching 5th grade we would read it every year. It's about a Native American girl living in the Central Valley and their lifestyle. They made those kinds of boats and I always found it fascinating and humbling.

Awesome. Reminds me of one of Mr Spock’s best lines...

Are you pondering what I’m pondering?
