Hey all!

I'm Sam and I'm a student at UCSC. As my title states, I am neither a paddler nor an angler, but I have recently become obsessed with spearfishing. My buddies and I are in the water any time the swell is small and we're not in class. We are currently in the hunt for some kayaks so we can expand our dive site repertoire, and I've lurked this forum for a while, so getting active on the forums seems like a good idea.

This community seems super awesome and welcoming and I'm stoked to become a part of it! I also recently joined NCUH but since this forum is a bit more active and the classifieds have some sweet deals I figured it was time to join NCKA too.

Thanks, and I hope to paddle/dive with y'all soon!

Sam

Right on Sam! right you are this form is way more active than the NCUH site. You know you can get some decent 10 foot long sit on top kayaks at big five or Dicks for a few hundred dollars that would probably work just fine for ya, If you want to big hatch where you can store gear yeah keep watching this site waiting for a screaming deal to come up.  Be forewarned the good deals go fast so you really have to be checking often!
Welcome and hope to see you out there someday!

There is an ocean kayak caper that just got posted for $350 on NCUH  would be better than the cheaper ones I told you about from Dick’s for a big five

Welcome Sam! This site has great people and is very active! Watch the classifieds like a hawk and you will score something real nice. Just be patient!

Sam, you can also rent kayaks at Capitola wharf, and Venture Quest kayak Santa Cruz Wharf.  Also, some awesome NCKA member in Santa Cruz might loan you a yak to use from time to time, despite the fact you are a UCSC student. The fact you like to kill things with a spear pretty much balances that one out OK.

Bahahah, Bushy, that made me crack up.

Sam, welcome to NCKA! Are you the same Sam that dives with Nicolas T. that recovered my dive mask a few months back? Also, keep an eye on the FS (for sale) and classifieds section for a yak. They go FAST so you have to be quick to the draw. You're also welcome to use my yak when I'm not in it!

Welcome Sam! You and your buddies should sign up for the annual Diver of the Year competition. No kayak required, and it is a great year-long event that will give you even more incentive to get in the water and hunt different species of fish.

Here is a link to the rules: http://doty.norcalkayakanglers.com/welcome#index

If you have any questions, shoot me a PM.

Hey Eric! You're right, it's me! And I actually have yet to dive with Nick! Thank you for offering to borrow your yak. I've been borrowing another buddy's and I've been out twice. Still got a lot to learn. So far, it's been a little overwhelming having to prep so much gear and having to set up and tear down so much stuff just to go diving! Shore diving definitely has its place. However, both times I've gone yak diving I've found some pretty awesome spots, so hopefully that trend continues.

Knew it was a little risky revealing that I'm not a loc  :smt003 but I'm glad that the fact I like to shoot fish in the face makes up for it!!
