Bring the salmon gear..! Looks like we're in that 6-8 year cycle according to the jack counts we got on the rivers last year. With these rains and the snow we've gotten this year.....I think it's going to start bringing in the toads.

Randall's Pac 'but - 51.5"   :smt007

Pete's brace from 2012 or 2013 may have been the best couple of salmon to come in at a GS.

No one's caught a wolf eel since Jedmo I think, and it may be the case that no one's caught an octopus since Andy.

Who's gonna catch something exotic this year?

I think the correct question as a newbie is what’s the best way to go about getting a sponsor for the event? Inn keeper had stated before that you may need to go fish ahead of time with the OG’s so they can watch you prior to sponsoring you. I have the same questions as you as a newbie but from the previous posts this sounds like the best and safest way in to a sponsorship. Maybe the community can comment on this and give some further clarity for us.

I’ve been up there a bunch of times last year. I’m just new to this board. Honestly my motivation in joining is so I can enter the tournament.

Anyone sponsoring you is also vouching for your good behavior. I believe that is still the expectation.

I believe you can still attend the event if you can't find a sponsor, just that you can't participate in the tourney portion...unless that has changed.   :smt005

You'd still be able to fish and chill with members.  Or you can try to attend some of the other events between now and GS and meet some folks.  If you haven't met any members yet, its highly unlikely anyone will sponsor a complete stranger.
If you ain't first, you're last.

I haven't attended any ncka events yet, but I have been fishing from my kayak several years now & have met some of you otw. Ian is my regular fishing buddy and I can thoroughly vouch for his behavior, always careful to be aware of regs and not be wasteful of the resource.
We fished the cove together half dozen or more times last year, and believe we met Inn Keeper and Lolita Eric on some of our trips (maybe you would recognize us in person?)
If my schedule allows I hope to register and attend GS13, right now trying to work it out with the lady. If I attend I would be happy to team with Ian.
Sorry if this goes against normal protocol / maybe some of this would have been better in PM?
And to Ian- about time you got on board, now you won't have to hear everything from me ;-p

Getting a sponsor isn't very hard, but getting more people to sign up before the last 10 days or so seems to be.

I think it will be most effective to make a separate post in NCKA, introducing yourself and asking for a sponsorship.  It's all about vouching for someone's behavior - the sponsor will get involved if there's any confrontation or other unfortunate occurrence involving the sponsored participant.

Another route would be to go on the Lost Coast Kayak Anglers page on Facebook.  I'm an admin, and I add pretty much whoever requests an add.  Introduce yourself there and ask for a sponsor - that's worked for a couple people recently.

I don't sponsor people myself, or I'd sponsor all you guys - you seem like good guys with ocean experience to me.

Strangers do get sponsored - happens all the time.  Just having the sponsorship program has resulted in having no unfortunate events like fights in camp, super drunk people disrupting or confronting other camps, guns brandished in camp...etc.  The expectation that, as a community, we do not tolerate disruptive, belligerent, confrontational, shit-faced, rude or aggressive behavior is a good one and has led to having success with large groups.

Thanks for trying a little harder.  :smt001

Sponsoring is vouching for someone's character.  Character is defined by fishing ethics, personal safety on the water, and probably most important is social skills in a group living environment.  We all live close together for days.  Little things, like loud music after hours, cursing around the wimmen and children, drunk AND disorderly, etc are just not going to be tolerated.  Not just the individual, but the sponsor is going to be held accountable for behavior.  If someone hasn't seen you in a social situation where drugs, alcohol, families and close living for days is involved, then don't expect them to sponsor you.   Most times this is done by attending an event without registration, then getting out to meet people.  There are lots of events throughout the year, fish-n-chills, smaller tournaments, etc can get you introduced to folks who have the ability to sponsor someone for GS.
I think this screening is the main reason GS is such a successful event.  Everyone knows everyone through everyone else.  It is family.  My camp is your camp.  It's a level of trust that the person on the water next to you or in the campg next to you is going to respect everyone and not be a burden by not understanding the risks on the water by preparation, or loose control in social situations.

My first trip to GS was sponsored by a lead in HOW where I volunteered my help at several events.  This person knew my character enough to take responsibility and risk his own reputation that I would not disappoint him.  Thanks Racin' Rob!!

You can also try fishing with someone and let them get to know you. It doesn’t have to be at the Cove. The fish and chill at Berryessa is 3/29 and you have till 4/20 to register. Go to Berryessa and hopefully you can get to know the guys.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
