A reliable, long lasting battery with good waterproofing connection and working FF is worth in gold for saltwater guys.
I check and tune my setup every couple months.

Here is why.
I have encountered foggy daysss that I could not see shore or anything in sight. Without it I won’t making it home. I don’t want to make a news.
As a backup I do have my phone fully charged just in case bad thing happen to my FF.

Anyone owe it to themself to get a liable setup.  Period.

In the long run, it is likely to be cheaper than SLAs...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

7 years ago I went on the Islander trip (a trip of a lifetime for me). I brought two SLA batteries for my live-well. Batteries fully charged on the ship. Both went dead within minutes of use and with no prior warning. Do you want your once-in-a-lifetime trip to be ruined by a stupid battery?

Lithium is reliable. There are many many lithium options that are cheaper, but you get what you pay for. You can either get a smart battery with a dumb charger, or a dumb battery with a smart charger. Like I said, you have many options.

For anyone considering a battery, you should definitely look at Chet's battery! I would have got one from him if he wasn't too busy salmon fishing lol j/k

after multiple trips out salmon fishing or crabbing(since now I can stay out longer *wink*) the SLA battery cant keep up. I even brought two SLA batteries with me just in case. These were the 10 ah batteries, heavy compare to the lithium. Now with the 2 lb lithium it last all day and then some :)

Like chet mention, when we go miles and miles off-shore, fog comes in and with no GPS, its really scary!! Like at Albion!! At any rate, go with lithium and fork out the money!

I have read several forums, trying to educate myself and just love trying wing a good deal.
This one idea is very appealing but too good to be true??

'surfingdude' takes an Anker battery that self contains battery and charger, USB chargeable.  Place battery into water tight box, splice a USB cable to mate to his fishfinder input connectors and presto - power for hours.  Assume 1A draw, ~20 OTW hours usage

Here is the shopping list (Jan 2019):
1-Battery RAVpower 22000mAh $41 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MQSMEEE/ref=pd_luc_rh_sspa_dk_huc_pt_expsub_1?psc=1
Benefits lifetime warranty, swappable for backup, small/low weight, multi purpose usage (charge any USB device, trips/vacation), minimal explode risk while charging, LED charge indicator.
2- Waterproof case $25 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FQFZGI/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_5?smid=A3SNLLVFZ6ABAC&psc=1 (cheaper is Plano watertight case if modified)
3- Connectors  $7 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A6LTK44/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_6?smid=AE8CEXT8X69U6&psc=1

Around $80.  Is it really this simple?  :smt013

I'm trying to fit my Garmin Echo 501c,

Short answer is no. The output voltage is 5V, fish finder needs 12V.

Shameless plug- check out what I offer under my signature. It's expensive, however all the spec is true not a single lie.
This will last a long time.

I'm trying to fit my Garmin Echo 501c,

That RAVpower pack has 2 USB output ports. Those are 5v ports. Unless your FF only needs 5v to power it on, that USB battery pack is useless to you. Some people have no business suggesting things to others when they have no clue what they're talking about. Please be careful what you read online.

I swear this is true....over 40 years in the trade as a union electrician. I have made every mistake possible. Same as a fisherman....every mistake you can make I have made at least once,.... no twice!

My new battery would not charge because....my power strip was turned off! What a jackass! Took me three nights to figure it out.
Don't hate me for it or verbally abuse me...I don't think I can live thru it!
Thanks to all for the advice, I needed it, Ron

CLASSIC!!!  That's Bushy style right there!!

Especially like the hammer in the pic.  (Plan B)
