If you go lipo,do your research and be safe.lipos have a reputation for catching fire and or exploding due to over charging

The video shows a lithuim-ion battery not Lipo.  FYI  most modern laptop, tablet, e-book reader, cell phone, MP3 player, cordless screwdriver or drill, etc. –  uses lithium-ion batteries.

LiPo (Lithium Polymer) batteries are widely used by 1000's of Radio Control hobbyist.  As SeaBird said these people are very critical of their batteries.   A custom made RC Helicopter can cost more than a fully rigged kayak.

Meinboy is spot on. Li-Pos are more temperamental than other chemistries and need to be respected but they can be perfectly safe if you understand what makes them angry and avoid it. I'm almost certainly going to use them myself for both my FF and my bait well and you bet your butt I'll sooner search for fish blind than let them get overdischarged.

You prevent deep discharging by attaching LiPo Voltage Checker + Warning Buzzer.  It starts beeping loud, really loud  if your charge is getting low.  Pretty cheap and you can buy them online easily.  Here's a video

any ace hardware 12v 7ah will last the day..they sell a square one 19-21 $ and a rectangle for like 25-27$

the rectangle one---bigger--lasts longer ---a long long day will kill  it but thats 8 maybe 9hrs.. I carry two on the yak-- the big one and the smaller square one just in case one has a fake charge or quits...simple to trickle charge up at night..
I solder two 8 " wires to the posts and then it works with wire nuts..charger clamps to charge..I silicone a big booger around the  posts and then wrap the whole thing with gorilla tape...keeps it strong =wires wont pull off and dry pretty much

it is simple quick  and cheap and and any ace has em

We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.

It might be lighter than a boat anchor but I'd rather have a LiPo that won't weigh much more than a burrito, won't cost all that much more and will last longer before having to be replaced. Then again I'll have the added cost of an actual anchor instead of just using my battery.

I was looking at the car jump start devices at Sears and saw this thing for $89 - probably bigger than Surfing Dude's little battery, maybe 8" x 3" x1' but didn't weigh much, and included some connecting things.  I have no idea whether it would be compatible with a fish finder.

I have a 12v 7a battery for a humminbird 688ci hd. It draws 650mah. My battery gives me about 5 hours before it quits. According to the math it's time for a new battery. It seems to be operating at 60-70%. Probably gonna jump up to at least 12ah
I only fish on days that end with Y

So far I haven't burn the house leaving it charged over night a few times now.  The LiFePO4 Battery was already charged once I woke up.  Anyway, I've had the 7ah for a good 3 years now and it's still working.  But because of the upgrade of my fish finder unit I've been using my 10ah, which I'm looking forward to upgrading next year.  Also, the charger is by the same company.

My method is a bit more expensive but is ultra light ...this pack runs my Lowrance DSI 5 color all day with the back light on 8....

http://www.amazon.com/Anker-20000mAh-Aluminum-Multi-Voltage-Technology/dp/B005NGLTZQ/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1447592807&sr=8-11&keywords=external+battery&refinements=p_89%3AAnker

I hope you realize that this battery is rated at 20a @ 3.7v only. It contains a single Lipo cell battery. Total power=74watt. Cost = $80. That's $1.08/watt.
This battery is $25. 4 cell Lipo. 14.8v @ 5a... http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__15521__Turnigy_5000mAh_4S1P_14_8v_20C_Hardcase_Pack.html
Total power=74watt. That's $0.33/watt.

Besides cost, if you're running 12v out of the Anker, it has to boost from 3.7v to 12v. Roughly 10% efficiency lost in the boost circuit is typical, meaning you will get ~66.6watt from your battery. Where as, if you're powering the your FF directly from the 4 cell Lipo, all power goes directly to the FF. You lose nothing.

Just saying.
