New kayak fisherman here  :smt006, although I have been lurking these forums for years.  I finally picked up a kayak from the classifieds section on this forum and got a great deal!  Thanks Augie!  I have been getting familiar with the kayak at a nearby lake.  I have also taken a Kayaking Skills and Safety class at Del Valle through Outback Adventures this past weekend.  It was a great class...very informative.  Although we were using sea kayaks, the newly learned skills should apply to the SOT kayaks.  We covered equipment, strokes, paddling technique, capsizing, dealing with a flooded kayak, and re-entries.  The re-entry part was very helpful.  We practiced team recovery and self recovery.  Now I just have to get all the recommended safety gear and give the big blue a try on a calm day.

A suggestion: develop your kayaking skills and figure out how to outfit your kayak by fishing in calm lakes before try kayak fishing in the ocean.

Welcome to the group and fish on  :smt006
