Cambria-Almost Wide Open Offshore 6-2

Launched @ the northern end of Marine Terrace @ 9:00 am to find very flat seas with a small sw swell.  Wind was non-existent & the ocean surface was glassy to the horizon!  Windswell basically non-existent also.  Great conditions & with the surf down I hoped it would be a good day.

Checked a couple kelp beds on the inside, got a bunch of bites & few small fish but nothing good.  Worked my way to 1/2 mile out, still got same amount of bites/fish but no big boys.  Figured it was so flat & calm going far out was no problem.

Hit a kelp bed that's pretty much the furthest bed out (1 mile) & immediately got lit up.  Within 15 minutes i had a 25" Ling, 4 blacks, gophers & a short cabazon.  Conditions stayed completely calm so I figured I'd head 200 yards further out.

Water was noticably deeper than @ the kelp. Got hit every time i dropped for the next 30 minutes & the drift was strong even with no wind.  Had a FAT 26" Ling that went on a 15 second run stripping 20lb line with the drag cinched down!  Continued to get a mish-mash of fish including olives, etc.  Ended up keeping a fat 26 & fat 25 lings.

The 25 ling had a 9" partially decomposed fish in it's belly, smelled like #@%%!! when i slit him open.

No Verms, tomorrow should be as good, hopefully.  Ocean condition are CALM!!!

PJ, What depth did you end up fishing at? I'm going out soon, just curious.

I would guess I was at 100 ft, give or take 10 ft.  Kelp seems to be 50-70 ft.

I'm hitting again tomorrow & if the weathers as calm I'm going as far out as I feel comfortable going, around 1.5 miles.  It was practically wide open out there w/ no kelp to get snagged in.

If the seas are nice take advantage! It's great to fish with as few snags as possible. I smell curried Vermillion coming.
