I plan to move some Scotty mounts and was wondering how to plug/fill a drill hole on a Hobie?  On my previous kayak I had been using JB Weld, 2-part epoxy adhesive.

Thanks!

The safest way to seal the holes is to put a bolt with a locking nut through each hole, and to put Aquaseal, Marine Goop, or some other sealant under the head of each bolt before you tighten the nut.  The risk of sealing the holes just with glue is that many kinds of glue don't adhere to kayak hull plastic, so the glue may pop out of the hole if you bang on it.  If you attempt to seal the holes with glue, put a piece of duct tape over the inside of the sealed hole to provide backup for the glue.

Hot glue gun - for holes above the water line.  Swab with denatured alcohol first.

Tape hole on the inside, fill with Crazy Glue and while glue still wet, sprinkle baking soda on glue.  This method approved by FAA for filling chips on helicopter rotors.  Strong and permanent.

Move the mount. Save the plastic you drill out of the new holes, use it to fill the old holes.  You can also pick up plastic rods for welding from your Hobie dealer. Just use a heat gun and fill the hole. If texture is smooth, use a small scraper and smooth the plastic. If it is rough, set a bit of 120 grit sandpaper on the work area while the plastic is still hot.

Like crash said, plastic weld is the right way to patch drilled holes. Soldering iron works too. Do a search on youtube for reference.

I doubt that helicopter rotors are made of polyethylene.

I've used stainless fender washers, a little goop, and a small bolt to hold it them together. It weighs almost nothing, is indestructible, leakproof, and easily reversible.
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

+1 to pmmpete and nowhereman.  It also leaves the possibility to use the same holes in case you changed your mind.  Different story if you need the hole to be flushed (in which case I would use plastic weld).
Somebody filled a hole with glue in the space station and it leaked air  :-)   ... plz dont flame ...  :smt044

I agree with crash on this.  Plastic welding is the preferred method and the safest way to permanently fill holes - but I use an old spoon to smooth the surface instead of a putty knife.

Was just at TAP plastics ordering some abs plastics for my electric bilge pump setup. The guy at the counter showed me this ABS solvent where u can glue two pieces together very cleanly... maybe I'll ask him next time if they have a solvent for polyethylene plastic... to use as a filler for holes or even worn down keels.....

you can also try using Well nuts. It’s a bolt with expanding rubber insulation. You can get them at Ace hardware. Not sure about Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Plastic welding is so easy and solid I can’t believe there’s anything else I would rather do.  Just did some plastic welding on my Kraken last weekend to fill holes I had drilled for a motor mount. I watched a few YouTube videos and went for it. So easy! I can’t believe I was afraid to try this technique... you shouldn’t be either.
