I just spoke to Tim, our Hobie rep.  As usual, they're supplying us with some nice schwagg to raffle off... but this time they're also offering a special top prize to the participant on a Hobie yak that catches the biggest fish.  The top prize is Hobie's new Livewell Bait Tank which should retail for around $250.  It will be totally self-contained including its own rechargeable battery and self-priming pump.  It should hit the market in a few weeks.  Below are pics/sketches of the prototype.

So... it's GAME ON for all of you Hobie paddlers/pedalers like Danglin, Ride123, VWtech, Yakuza, Kevin, Ducksoup, Paul, and Frankfishing.

Wow, that is pretty cool looking, but the whole.. "top prize for hobie peddlers" bit is pretty lame.  I suppose I understand that this thing probably only fits hobie kayaks and all.. but a non-hobie peddler could always try and sell it just like people who win kayaks that they don't want.  Anyway, the hobie peddle guys will probably need their own prize :) :smt064

Hey Danglin, I think you might consider readjusting your current horseshoe, or haven't you noticed that every single one of you AOTY entries is the smallest fish of its species entered.  Or is that what you're trying for?  What am I saying, with a sturgeon and a halibut, you're probably going to easily pass me in points this year.

By the way, I'm not so sure you're the luckiest NCKA tournament winner we've ever had. :)

I sort of agree about not withholding  a prize according to the yak you're fishing.  I agree with bsteves the tank could be #adapted# possibly, or certainly sold by any of us if we won it.

I have to be careful, cause I am associated with OK, but just as an NCKA'er I think all prizes should be available for everyone if the contest is NCKA, which officially is not aligned with any manufacturer.

We've had plenty of contests where the prize is a brand-new kayak from a manufacturer for anyone in the contest, not just those who paddle "their" boats.  This includes OK as well as Wilderness every year for, what, 7 years or so?

Really would be unfortunate to create stratification in an NCKA event, with some people being "more eligible" than others.....

Would I then have to create an Ocean Kayak prize for the OK paddlers?  Sean offer something just for Malibu riders?  Where would it all end?  Oh, the humanity!!!

Smack talk is fine, but the main purpose of these events is to get people together to have fun, catch fish, meet the people behind the avatars, maybe win a prize in fair even competition, and get the bragging rights.  The point is, it's "US" not "us vs them."

Great idea with the best of intentions I'm sure.  I trust Chuck E ethically as one of the greatest on the board you know I love you (XXXXOOOOO), but maybe we could think this one through a bit more and adjust?

BTW, I'm not sure your the luckest person who ever won NCKA Tourneys..bsteves"

Who is the luckest???  You...? :smt002,  I'm not really proud of my luck, I'll just take'em where I can get em....

And oh ya, I am definitely aware of my " Short " comings on  the AOTY,  If I ever get out of the " Honey Do List "

And stop getting my ass kicked @ work, I might be able to do something about this....

As far` as my Luck,  I strongly feel with all the newbie luck out there I don't stand a Chance and will now have to actually learn how to fish :smt044

You still have time for that Sturgeon toward the end of the year, and halibut are waiting for ya right now, so chin up!!!.. :smt003..

Have to Agree with Scallen and Brain about the statification, It's great that Hobie/Tim are putting up a nice prize, but the press gets across with out having to exclude others...Ironicaly, it looks like it's getting worse press making available to Hobie People than just having a prize out there.....Danglin

As a fellow peddler I too think it should be up for grabs for all. Heck with all the talented riggers we have, someone will come up with something.

For you Danglin' It is gonna be fun watching all you experienced guys and learning from you all. See I'm a rookie too at ocean kayak fishing. I think this event will be a kick. A lot of fun and a lot of dissin'. See you there. We peddlers should also have a race, just for the heck of it, then the paddlers. Who's the fastest :smt064

Hey Danglin,  sorry about the small fish dig.  That wasn't nice of me, but if I were you I'd embrace it and go for the lowest possible score while catching all 10 species.  Anyway, I too have the issue of not being able to get out as much as I used to and I'll probably get a rockfish and a lingcod to add to my points and that will be it.  I've never been able to bag a salmon, trout, or halibut from the kayak, I don't even want to bother with sturgeon, and I've caught maybe 2 cabezons ever.  My guess is that I'm going to end the year with about 750 pts total if I'm "lucky".

Speaking of lucky... I'd like to think that winning tournaments had something to do with skill. But having won two of them where it's just the biggest fish wins, I'm pretty sure it mostly has to do with being lucky that day. Thus my assertion that I'm luckier in tournaments than you.  Although you won your's with much more style.  Anyway, I figure my winning luck is spent now for at least two lifetimes, so now I'm entering tournaments to simply give back and add money to the prize pool.  BTW, I'm a big believer in beginner's luck.

Is there a prize for all fish being the smallest? might be in on that one!!!   Sturgeon in those sloughs are amazing, napa, montezuma, thick as thieves.

I hear ya on all said with luck and such, BTW, can't hurt my feelings, ya sould hear the abuse I get/give in the Firehouse, down right ugly, you would think middleschool never stopped!!!

Thanks for the " Style " Comment, that Thresher will live forever with me, and so will the cuts!!!

Your right though about the prize for certain kayak users, I'm sure ChuckE is going to wake from his nap and need a Motrin or 2, along with a shot of Whiskey.. :chug..Again thanks to Tim/Hobie for the prizes,

But for the good of the many, and not the few,( Spock, Star Trek 2 )

which is what NCKA is about, it should be adjusted, my 2 cents.............Danglin

If a non-Hobie owner won a $250 bait tank, it might just inspire that winner (or someone s/he knows) to buy a Hobie, which theoretically would win a new convert (the ultimate goal?).

hmmmm...  'course, if I won it, I'd probably end up selling it to a hobie owner, honestly.

For this next tournament, I'm going to host an informal "Money Between Friends" sub-tournament for owners of gray Cobra Navigator XFs. Entry fee is $20, single biggest fish wins (100% payout).

Will it hold a 7-lb largemouth plus 4 other 2-lbers to fill out my limit?
