Not sure about the salmon regulations when it comes to having the proper gear on a kayak when fishing for salmon. Is it legal to have barbed hooks on a kayak when fishing for salmon. I know that you can not fish for salmon with barbed hooks. But what about having two fishing poles set up for different type of fishing?

Yeah that's fine to have multiple rods and barbed hooks on deck.  Just don't use barbed hooks or have more than one rod in the water if you are targeting salmon or have salmon on board.  Also don't use more than one rod if you have on board or are targeting RCG or pac hali. .

Some others can chime in as well but my understanding is you can have barbed hooks on your kayak when you're fishing for salmon but once you catch one and have it in the boat, even if you want to fish for something else, it has to be with barbless hooks.

For instance, if you have a salmon on the boat, even if you are fishing rockfish, those hooks have to be barbless. But before landing a salmon, if you're targeting something else, you can fish barbed.

If you catch a salmon in the ocean while using a barbed hook, you have to let the salmon go.

Sorry guys I probably wasn't clear, definitely know you need to fish salmon with barbless hooks but meant that you are allowed to have barbed hooks on your kayak while you were fishing barbless hooks for salmon. Appreciate clearing up any confusion my post might have had!

Brings up an interesting question that I haven't thought about and do not know the answer to:

If you have salmon onboard and stop on the way back in to mooch for lingcod or rockfish, using bait, between Horse mountain and pt conception, do you need to use CA legal barbless circles?

That’s how I interpreted the regulations. Circle hooks work fine on rockfish, but lingcod have mouths that are just too big or something, so they often don’t get hooked on the corner of the mouth and their teeth can cut the line if you’re using salmon-weight mooching leaders.

You cannot have barbed gear on a rod if you have salmon on board.

You must use a barbless circle hook if you're using bait and have a salmon on board - unless you're trolling.

Here's the rule that will help you the most:  if you're fishing for salmon using bait and doing anything other than trolling, then you need to use a circle hook.

If you use more than one circle hook they must be hard-tied with no more than 5" between the eye of the upper hook and the bottom curve of the lower hook.

Here's a question I haven't been able to figure out.
We are constantly peddling/paddling to compensate for current etc.
Is this considered trolling as we are constantly under power, or is this considered mooching as we may not be actually gaining much ground?
