I’m looking for a suggestion on a salmon trolling rod for using a deep six. I’ve mostly been downrigger trolling for ocean salmon, but I have a few deep sixes that I’ve collected. This week I was in the mendo coast for rockfish and lings but I decided to bring a deep six and salmon lure just in case. I was trolling it using my 6’6 trevala jigging rod. I hooked one salmon and lost it at the kayak due to operator error. I also partly blame the short rod and lots of gear hanging off it while trying to land the fish.

So what it a good rod for diver trolling? Preferably one that is versatile enough to pull double duty maybe jigging or drifting bait. I have an ugly stick tiger that I hate, a trevala that seems too short (or maybe I just need to try harder) and a downrigger rod that seems too soft.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I troll double deep six using a 7' Trevala ML. The tip is stiff enough to troll a diver, but soft enough to absorb the shock of sudden runs.

And of course it is perfect for jigging for rockfish.

Yeah, keeping tension on the hook with a big heavy diver swinging around is tricky. I use a long soft rod for all my salmon trolling, and just try to keep a nice deep bend in it. I also keep my drag tighter when using a diver than with a downrigger, again to make up for the weight and resistance of the diver. I haven’t tried enough rods to know if there’s something out there I might like better.

What length do you prefer? Is 9ft too long for kayak?
I’m looking at a rod with specs 9ft 10-20 lbs 1-6oz lure

The rod I usually use for salmon is over 10' long, but most kayakers seem to prefer shorter rods. I think 9' would be great.
