East Coast Striped Bass Fishing

Saw this today and wanted to share. This was the type of striper fishing I saw as a kid on the East Coast. Once school was out the big ones were pretty much in range and had moved up from the south.  Not uncommon to see these being caught from surf fisherman and people on skiff's. By skiff, I mean home made 8-10 foot long plywood boats.

When I was in Jr. High, I had a mechanical drawing teacher who ran a charter boat (24 foot whaler if I recall) in the late spring and summer. Said he made more as a Charter Captain then being a school teacher. He used to say being a teacher was what he did when to cover his time when he wasn't fishing.  He would show us pics, 40 pound striper's were the norm for that guy.

Believe it or not,  30-40 pound striper's used to be a fairly common occurrence. Overfishing led to a decline and though multi state management they were able to bring the striper back to good stocks. A fish you see in some of the east coast video's the Blue Fish, is just light weight fun. They fight like no one's business. The only bad part to blue fish is they are school fish, and if they are in an area, everything else leaves.
