Hi All. I stumbled on this site researching mods for my kayak....really,researching everything about kayak fishing.

A little about myself. I'm an arborist in Wisconsin who's been active on a local fishing board for close to 20 years. One shortfall of my "home" fishing page/site/group (Lake-Link.com) is that there's very few members who kayak fish and most of THOSE aren't hardcore....Sure there's a dozen or do regulars who fish trout and salmon out of Lake Michigan harbors, and some others who fish local lakes but there really isn't the kayak fishing information resources that coastal states have.

I'm not sure how long it'll take me to come to California for camping and fishing but maybe some day. However, several years ago I started taking extended camping trips to Florida during the coolest parts of Wisconsin winters. The first year was just trailering my motorcycle. I figured I'd be OK shore fishing. I wasn't.  The following yearwith a canoe. It didn't take long to discover how bad that was for fishing out in the gulf. I also visited the Keys for a few days and didn't even bother getting it wet. The next year I bought a $500 SOT yak. Fished every day for a month but it's got shortcomings.

Now I've gone and bought a used 2010 Hobie Revo. I plan on pushing the limits but also plan on absorbing every bit of information I can from folks who've been doing this much longer than I.

I've owned boats for decades. Also ice fish up here during the 3- 5 months that safe ice covers our inland lakes. But #1 - the challenge of most fishing I've been doing has long passed with having the right toys. And #2) I'm a 55 year old tree climber. I need a break during the winter and frankly,6 weeks away from work and wife and cold and snow makes me appreciate them all just a little bit more.

So my plan is to be a kayak fishing bum for 6 weeks out of every year. Occasionally get the yak out up here. I'd REALLY like to eventually check out the Pacific coast but for a while yet it'll be the keys.

Here's what I do with fishing sites that are new to me: I pick a topic,do a search and read the entire thread going back years. I also compare with other sites in other parts of the country - it's amazing how different the sport is - or even common kayak mods or necessary equipment or ??? - in different regions.

So...I VERY much appreciate the information you all have already shared. I will pick thru that before I even think of starting a new "dumb question" thread. I know most likely that question has been answered a whole bunch of times.

 Thanks again ya'all

Get Bent! Don’t be afraid to ask a question, answers change. I think it’s jacked up to tell someone to do a search be for asking a question. Plus someone can answer a question I’m a few minutes when it can take awhile to find what you are looking for. I like to climb trees too.

Great intro!

I'm a native Iowan, and still have some family in the Omaha area. If you ever want to try kayak fishing in the Santa Cruz area, let me know---I've even got a Revo 16 (actually, a 2013 Adventure) that you can borrow. I don't use that one much anymore as I've upgraded to an AI...

Are you pondering what I’m pondering?
