Hi Everyone

I was recently at the Nor Cal Event at Timber Cove on 5-5-18.  That was my first time ocean fishing on a kayak.  So if you saw a guy with a camo Hobie Yacking / AKA Chumming the water, that would be me.   Had blast and love the comradery of all my fellow kayaks.  lots of good advice and help from everyone.   So my question is , what is a good day look like? weather related.  that day had 2 feet swell and over cast.  I thought it was not bad but is that the best it gets?   Learning how to tell what a good weather day looks like.  Any advice would be nice.  Thanks

Water can get so flat it looks like glass, but it can turn just like that as well.

2 foot swell is pretty close to as good as it gets.  At least for ocean conditions.

It depends where you're fishing.

In southern Monterey Bay, 5ft @ 12sec with 10kt winds is a decent day in my book. My rule of thumb here is the swell height needs to be at least 1/2 of the interval and less wind the better.

I saw yakkers out there in 20kt winds and 6ft swell yesterday that looked like a bummer. Watched one guy flip about 1/2 mi out.

I thought it was a bit choppy considering it was supposed to be 2-1/2 @ 12 improving to 16 seconds. I’ve had smoother days before. Sometimes the problem isn’t just how high or fast the swell is. The secondary swell can really mix it up and increase your chances for getting sick. One wave pushes you in one direction followed by a chop from another direction. It’s the washing machine effect. If you’re sensitive to motion sickness try all the usual medications including taking the first dose the night before. Do a search here and you’ll find some discussions about it. I believe too much protein for breakfast or even the night before causes me problems. I like having some antacid tablets with me. If I’m feeling queasy the antacid will make me burp and help me maintain my stomach contents.

Welcome to NCKA.

Weather can be unpredictable, always expect the worse.
I get seasick sometimes so I really read the swells by the wave height and the interval. For me, anything over 6 feet is not enjoyable. Anything less than 12sec (except when the height is 5ft) is not enjoyable. Look at the secondary swells, too.

Winds more than 10mph are not enjoyable either. I fish to relax and not to fight for survivable. To each his own, I like it when the ocean is like a lake. Be safe.

Sounds like you had excellent conditions. Less than 6ft swells from a protected launch and the fan stays on low until at least noon is a good day.  In your case take a seasickness pill the night before the trip Something with Ginger in the morning of  - is also helpful.
Pre-Tie your leaders beforehand an slip one on when you need to change it up. Staring down at fine work while OTW is a quick way to get seasick

Ask your Dr to preacribe you promethazine (aka Phenergan, what they give kids for colds/cough). Its what they give people in the coast guard and navy and works like a charm, otc medicines and homeopathic remedies dont even compare. 25 mg and you will be a salty sailor in no time flat.
