I've got a head start on the holiday weekend. And it looks like we're getting a minor break from the weather gods. Davenport? Pigeon Point? Natural Bridges? Linda Mar for Salmon?

I'm off Friday, would consider fishing in the AM, somewhere in the area. I'm in Scotts Valley, willing to travel an hour or so...gotta be off the water by 11:00 or so...later if the fish are cooperating.

I fished Davenport a couple of weeks ago for nada...not just fishless, but absolutely no signs of fish-not a takedown or strike at all.

Might be good to try Mitchell's cove to natural bridges for rockfish/halibut.  I've never fished pigeon point, but I'd love to have a go at it.

Paul

Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

Paul,

Mitchell Cove is sounding pretty good. There are now two salmon known to be caught in this area recently too. Looks like there's some stairs to deal with. Any known issues with parking there at 5:00 AM ?

Plenty of parking in area, no meters, no "camping", but I think the cops will decide they have other priorities if you behave yourself and just doze in your car.
The stairs are an issue - 2-3 flights with turns, railings and adjacent walls.  Kimo got down and up with his P15 on his head by himself, but I knew that I didn't have the muscles or the back to try that with mine, and it was harder for Kimo to help me down than to do it himself - so he made two trips to lug both of ours back up by himself.

Scott,

Mitchell's should be an easy launch, but it's a two man carry down the stairs etc. That will keep me from fishing the spot alone, but with company, no problem. I'd be inclined to look for structure off of Natural Bridges in 60 to 80 feet. The kelp produces when nothing else works, but you have to scratch for them.

Let's keep an eye on the weather report, and confirm tomorrow. If wind and swell look daunting, Capitola is a bail out plan.

How about santa cruz harbor, that's where I've launched from the last 2 times. just that it'll take a good 30 min paddeling to natural bridges but that's not too bad. Also tried santa cruz wharf but got two nasty scratches from dragging it up the stairs so I don't recommend it.

tallpaul,

So far the weather forecast is looking pretty good, and has only changed slightly since Monday - for the better:

PIGEON POINT TO POINT PIEDRAS BLANCAS TO 20 NM
.FRI...SW TO W WINDS 5 TO 10 KT...BECOMING NW 10 TO 15 KT IN THE
AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 2 FT. NW SWELL 3 TO 6 FT AND SW 2 FT. PATCHY
FOG.

MONTEREY BAY
.FRI...LIGHT WINDS BECOMING W 10 TO 15 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND
WAVES 1 TO 2 FT. NW SWELL 3 TO 6 FT AND SW 2 FT. PATCHY FOG.

So unless things change radically, let's plan on Mitchells. I'll give you a call tomorrow night to really cement the plans.

Pablo,

I wish you the best of luck in your nanny hunt.  May your nanny-limbo turn into nanny-nirvana.

Hey, I just went and checked out Mitchell's for you guys. It's definitely do-able, swell-wise, and should be better in the AM, tide-wise. Standard surf-launch precautions apply.

Have fun,
