I've been trying few options for my halibut rig, but I find my rig tangled each time.
Question: what type of mono / setup do you use?

Make sure you are moving as you slowly lower your rig.

Oh - it doesn't get tangled when dropping the line... it happens after trolling a while.
I'm thinking I should use a less flexible mono for the hooks leader.

Are you using a three-way rig? I like to substitute the three-way swivel with a long-ish dropper loop for the hook. I've never gotten tangled but then again I've never caught a keeper halibut :/

The only solution I have found was to go with large, high quality (read, expensive) 3 way swivels.
I also change the lenth of leader to suit the water clarity/weather. Darker water, choke it up. clear water and finiky fih, smaller hooks, longer, lighter line leader.

I sometimes add another ball bearing snap swivel between the leader and the 3way, in a pinch. That can backfire with even worse tangles on occasion.
it worked for these guys in September though.

Have you tried using a spreader instead of a three way swivel? That may help prevent tangles when you lower your rig down.

Make sure you have a line between your main line and dodger/flasher.  I would recommend at least 36".   Imagine that you slow down or stop, the dodger will fall down due to weight.  Without that line between your main and dodger, the dodger rig will likely wrap around your bounce ball/main line setup.

Here is Keith's site, there is a pic there.

I used to get a fair amount of tangles until I added a bead chain swivel to the three way swivel on the hook leader line.

could be a combination of your speed + current + tack + rig (lengths).  it happens, just try and take note when it occurs... and avoid that combo.

most likely you stopped paddling, or turned, while going against the current.

Stay moving forward, let rig sink down slowly, big 3 way swivel, heavy enough weight, maybe long enough leader so dodger doesn't get tangled with weight line?

I think this is actually a great possible solution as I've tried it in the past with some success. Just pay attention to how the fish react to the increasing line size (as another posted mentioned)
