Dear Fish Gods,

I am writing to you concerning my outing at Stillwater Cove yesterday morning.  Have I in some way offended you?  I mean, I don't mind getting up early and driving 90 minutes to go fishing, at the cost of nearly $50 in gas and parking fees, as long as I get a little something in return.  Don't get me wrong - I'm not asking for a guarantee here, but c'mon!  I spent all morning riding those rollercoaster-like swells and being buffeted by the wind, for what?  Nothing!  That's right, not one single rockie in the abundant vicinity of Stillwater Cove saw fit to nibble on my offerings.  Seriously...if I have caught 2 or 3 little guys and sent them back, at least I would have felt like I had gotten something out of the day.  But no-o-o-o...you weren't even gonna give me that little bit of satisfaction, were you?  I mean, I tried everything...various lures, even tipping them with frozen bait when I realized how dismal the prospects were looking.  I know the fish were there, too...yeah, I saw those guys following my lures to the surface, thanks to the good visibility.  I even saw that big one come out from under that huge rock...yeah, you know which one I mean.  Looked like a ling, in about 15 feet of water inside the cove, almost went for the swimbait I was drifting past his hidey-hole.  Got me excited enough to paddle against the wind and circle back 3-4 more times in hopes that he'd try again, but I guess that was just a tease on your part.  Oh, and that ONE bite I got, right around 10:45?  That was just plain mean.  You knew that I had to pee so bad that my vision was turning yellow, so you sent one of your fishies to give my line a good solid tug...just enough to keep me on the water suffering for another 45 minutes, until my patience gave out (thankfully before my bladder did).  Wrong, just wrong...

Also, conspiring with the traffic gods to delay my trip home by 30 minutes was I nice touch.  I mean, who in this day and age runs out of gas, especially when they're driving a brand-new Corvette?  Geez...of course, the resulting backup on 156 was miles long, thanks to the tow truck and CHP cars who felt obligated to sit around while this guy waited for gas.  As I said, nice touch.

Anyhow, I just wanted to voice my complaints regarding your poor, mean-spirited performance yesterday.  I certainly hope you do better next time.

Usagi

PS: If in any way this letter tempts you to place a season-long fishing curse on the writer, this is actually Mooch stealing Usagi's log-in info.  No, really.

Skunks suck, especially when fishing that area.  We were out Saturday and hit it hard.  Yesterday we were rollerskating with the family in Monterey about 3 PM and the wind was strong.  It was hard to skate up wind.  Glad I was not out on my kayak.  You will do better next time.

Sorry to hear about the skunk Usagi. Just one of those days. You have to quite trying at some point, give up, and expect the worst. I usually strap the rods down when I'm ready to go and paddle double time until my arms and legs burn. It gets a little frustration out.

BTW, you might want to try to take hwy 1 to 17 next time. I always have luck with that route.

Dear Usagi,

Just to make feel you "better"  :smt003....I believe you are the FIRST kayak fisherman to get skunked at Still Water and to make you even feel "better".....here's a pic of my very first trip to Still Water  :smt002

Oh....and by the way, the Weather was PERFECT....no wind or roller coaster swells....did not have to deal with any traffic.....I was using the same various lures that you were using......I did not have to urge to pee the whole time I was fishing....or rather in my case "catching".......I did see a beautiful blond driving a brand new corvette as she winked and smiled at me as she drove by....by the way, did I mention that there was NO TRAFFIC that day :smt002

.....also forgot to mention that I was fishing from a "kayak" and not a "bicycle"  :smt003 :smt002

Usagi I think you have become too civilized!  When the gods are angry, our ancestors did not send them a post or text message, no we gave them a sacrifice.  Virgins are scarce and volcanoes are far away, so may I recommend tossing a megabait into the sea.  Ideally toss all your lures and a few rods in the shallows.

It will cleanse your soul.

then send me the GPS coordinates  :smt001
