In need of a new F2F. Been debating whether I need Down Imaging. What's your guys opinions and reviews of it? How is it for Ocean Rockfish? Trolling for trout, striker, etc. Worth it or naw. Looking at getting the hummingbird helix 5

I have a HOOK-5 and a Helix 5, both with down-imaging, and I don't use it much, mostly because I don't think about using it   :smt003

I think whether or not you find it useful might depend on where you're fishing.  A lot of my time is spent in and around kelp beds, and it doesn't help me there.  I really should turn it on when I'm around rocks or along a jetty but, like I said, I don't remember that I have it.  D'oh!

(I got the Helix from GPS Nation and because their price for the DI unit was so close to the best price I could find for non-DI units I went for it promising myself I'd remember to use the DI.  I have no association whatsoever with GPS Nation other than I bought a fish finder from them)

I don't think its necessary for ocean rockfish or trolling.  CHIRP is more important for trolling, and generally most FFs can't do CHIRP and DI at the same time.

Generally the only time I bust out DI in the ocean is when I want to confirm something I saw on the regular sonar screen wasn't just a phantom mark...

I have a fish finder with down imaging capability, but I essentially never use it.  This may be because I do a lot of downrigger trolling and jigging in deep water, and down imaging doesn't show me anything useful at all. I suspect if you fish in shallow water with a lot of vegetation and wood, it might be more useful.  It doesn't help me.

So pretty much DI wouldn't help me much from what I'm getting from y'all. Thanks guys..ill stick to a basic chirp and GPS setup then.

I use my DI when I'm fishing freshwater.

It definitely shows more detail, you can see suspended fish within structure.

I think it can help in combination with regular sonar to pick out structure, but then you need a screen big enough to view both.  Lowrance has an overlay feature where you can do both in the same sonar screen.  However, all that being said I still don't use that much.  I just tried out side scan in the saltwater for the first time these past 2 weeks and that works great for locating structure and/or smooth bottom to either side.
