I quit competing in fishing derby or tournaments 8 years ago. WAY too many prima donnas involved. I just started showing up to fish and hang out with friends. Seen way too much cheating and clicky bullshit to leave a permanent sour taste in my mouth. Not all, but quite a few put on a "tourney" to line their pockets then they cry about all the time and effort. If it is really the pain in the ass to the level they claim.....why do it? Too much bullshit.
Everything is a tournament today. Fish and chills are long gone-everyone saves up time and money for the tourneys. I remember the days of old where we just planned a fishing/camping weekend with maybe a side bet. Nobody was a prostaff, egos and image played no roll in what you paddled or what rod you had, or who copied who's patent bait design. We fished. We drank. We smoked. We got along.
It has gotten way out of hand.
Just my 2 cents.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

Yes Tahoe. I've been working on learning about jigging for Macks. Let's hope for less wind this time though.

you sure you don't want another 25mph windstorm with literally 6 foot windswells....on the calm part of the lake?

I like the honor system AOTD FNCs. $5 buy ins, get a measuring "card" that you can write in your fish and record your score.  But no pictures required to prove your card.  keep 'em small.  keep it on the honor system.  winner has to buy dinner.

Hahaha, I quit participating a while back. I was becoming "That guy". Had to pull back and let it go. Glad some continue to do the work to put on events. Sorry i'm not able to participate and accept that "arbitrary, surprise" rule. Others will probably be joining me in this attitude. then as Rich pointed out, we can get back to some good fish and chills.... Like next month with a BBQ after at my place or something (as I'm 7 miles from lake) or Folsom, there are SOOOOO many lakes here in the area! Bullard's bar anyone!?!?!? The Cash prize thing, Folks get to chasing the cash instead of a good time. We all need more good times. Watch for the hookups! Get out there even if there is no prize. You might have a great time with great folks....
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Just because it's not your thing, doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it.  Many people are way into it.

BTW, who's putting on a tourney to line their pockets?  I'm not aware of anyone, but I don't track it that carefully either.

I agree with both sides if that is possible.  There is nothing wrong with those that want to compete in tourneys and there is nothing wrong with those that want to spend the day on the lake fishing just because.  Some can actually do both.

Gotta say reading about the event in general it sounds like a lot of fun.... as newbie my expectation would be anyways to be a provider of price money to the winners.... but having a lottery chance of winning, BBW, Beer, kayak fishing on lakem meeting new people all sounds great to me. And I could learn by watching how others catch and release some nice fish.  Tournaments in any sport can be tricky.... golfing anyone? Had some drama there as well on higher prices events. Will watch out for event next year.

WOW! Organizing and running a fishing tournament to line your pockets? I've never organized or run a tournament but based on my observations before, during and after fishing tournamnts and my work experience organizing seminars and conferences, I can think of better ways to make 25 cents an hour.

When I first got into ski instructing, I was asked, "wanna know how to make $50,000 a year as a ski instructor?  Have a full time job that makes $100,000 a year."  I would bet putting on a tourney is pretty close to that as well.  Running a tourney to "line their pockets" is a pretty harsh thing to state.  As to why they do it, seems obvious.  A lot more obvious than lining their pockets.

My hat is off to those who run the tournaments I've attended.  To love your sport and fellow kayakers enough to put up with all it takes to make it right, and they have always been right, those that I've attended, that's something really special.  Thank you!

Just the little I've done organizing the group site for simply fishing and the group buy on the fish ID chart tells me how much work must be required to put on a tournament. Thank you to all the tournament directors and their helpers.

Well your 2 cent are about worth just that. I enjoy the tournament aspect and I would have to assume there is no one lining their pockets based on the fees collected for the tourney. A lot of hard effort and time goes into making these thing happen and all the prizes and donations they receive and raise money for charities around the area. You are totally wrong in my opinion. There will always be someone who gets their panties wet when shit don't go their way but overall they are run fine. I almost always know I rpobably won't win but just love to get out there and have some fun. Fish and chills are great too but tournaments always brign a little more excitement and thrill of having the chance to win some bragging rights.
Just my 3 cents which means my opinion is worth more than yours!  :smt005

Not everyone is lining their pockets come on. I am aware of a couple that scalped the shit out of the dough. You have missed my point. Omit that sentence from my post and take the rest to heart.
