So I wake up, load my boat and drive up to Harvey Street. It's a total Mixmaster out there, relentless swells, choppy, turbid, damn. So I decide to backtrack down to Villa Creek south of Point Estero. I park my truck, look at the gate in the fence and it is wrapped in barbed wire and covered with signs. Villa Creek access is closed. In fact, from Point Estero east halfway to the Cayucos Pier is now closed by the State Park Dept. through September due to the Snowy Plover.

There is no access between Point Estero and Marine Terrace. What this means is that once the MPA's take effect about 15 miles of contiguous shoreline will be for all intents and purposes inaccessible to kayaks, except for October. This, in a county already infamous for poor coastal access.

The Gods are conspiring against us.

Wow!
That makes me really sad...and ANGRY!
Damn, that sucks!

I HATE snowy plovers. I can't take my dog to a beach between Seaside and Aptos because of those stupid birds. The worst part is that they seem to be EVERYWHERE! Who says they're endangered? Total BS.

On the bright side, nice map you made there. I especially like the title! HA!

Thanks,
PK

I HATE snowy plovers.

Yeah. They have about half of that 4 mile long sandspit at Morro Bay shut down for Plovers too. The frickin' things seem to be everywhere. Endangered, pfft.

Funny thing is I've always identified myself as environmentally minded. I need to rethink that. This environmental thing has gone off the rails.

I'm with you guys, that really sucks, we humans must be worse than all the snowy plovers natural predators.  we seem to be losing alot of  coastal access to this endangered bird, which has habitat everywhere, and is in more danger from natural predators, than from some people at the beach or walking down a path to the water.  Absolutely ridiculous.

my niece, a typical Peta, vegan, greenpeace, hippie etc from Tahoe was completely freaked out when her beloved dog was not allowed to go to the beach.

I think it is the first time she ever thought that maybe the term environmentalist has been hijacked not by environmentally conscious people but a group of nut jobs who wouldnt recognize reality if it smacked em upside the head.

so when you think of the plover, maybe its the beginning of the end when the arm chair enviromentalist finds out he cant access his local beach and gets pissed

well we can all hope

Andy,
Yes, you can fish off of Cambria... but the best areas will be closing. You must be looking at the Cambria State Marine Conservation Area which is north of Marine Terrace, this is a recreational fishing only area. Now read the White Rock/Cambria State Marine Conservation Area which extends south from the Recreation only park.

"Permitted/Prohibited Uses: Take of all living marine resources is prohibited except the commercial take of giant kelp"

They changed the name of what was is now the White Rock SMCA twice, and they changed the designation of the park from a "reserve" to a "conservation area" at the last minute. The change in designation had something to do with kelp harvesting but changes nothing for us.

Just to be clear, if you drew a line due west from the northern boundary of the Marine Terrace development out to approximately a mile then drew a line SE paralleling the coast for 3 miles, then due east to the shore, that area will soon be off limits for fishing.
