getting a 7% retro and a coaching stipend at the end of the month. I told my wife that I am going for it and am buying a kayak. I was tossing around the idea of a pontoon boat but thing the kayak will be better in the long run. I'm 6'2" 215 but fluctuate up to 235 some times (weightlifter). I plan to test ride the OK Prowler 15 angler. What others should I try? Plan to start off fishing lakes (del valle & shadow cliffs) and then graduate to the bay and ocean with experiance. Besides a yak, paddle, PFD, and lessons, what will I need before I venture out? And where should I shop. I alway try and support local buisnesses when possible

Thanks,
Mike

For the prowler you can check out Aquan Sports in San Carlos, also I think Sunrise Mountain  Sports carries them as well. I would also try to make a trip up to Mendo and hookup with Sean to try the Maruarder and maybe an Malibu X-factor or Extreme, both are big guy boats.

Have fun and try to paddle them all if you can, everyone has different likes and dislikes...

Mike - if possible, get a nice comfortable seat and a light weight paddle...trust me, It will make paddling (and fishing) a lot more favorable  :smt045 And like Bill, had mentioned - paddle a few other kayaks before you make a decision (take your time).

I've seen newbies rush into it and buy the first kayak that's on a "special" deal and not even test paddle 'em  :smt011

Keep an eye on the local kayak tournaments - swing by and I'm sure our members would be more than happy to have you test paddle their yaks. It would also be beneficial for you to check out how everyone rigs their kayaks. We will have one at Half Moon Bay sometime soon.

See you on the water soon and welcome to the madness  :smt077

Mooch is right, the value of a great seat and paddle are often overlooked.

Here is the seat I use and like a lot.  I have paddled before in a lower seat and there was a big difference, and you are bigger than I am.

You can get a similar one on eBay for much less:

In fact, in one of the pics I see a STS logo.  And the description looks pulled straight from the STS site.  So it actually may be the same seat.

Congrats on the raise and stipend - and welcome!
