Subject: Kayak Fishing Contest Speaks out

I'm an active member of the Norcal Kayak Anglers website (NCKA.org) and
recently a discussion has surfaced regarding the June 12th derby.

The debate has been whether or not sharks/rays/skates should be allowed,
as the entry form states "heaviest fish".

Personally, I prefer to EXCLUDE these species, as I fear many will head
to Elkhorn Slough, where sharks/rays are very common AND ARE BREEDING.
Although some anglers my eat sharks/rays, I believe many would not eat
these species, but rather target them for the chance to win a kayak.

Can you clarify for the group, if sharks/rays/skates will be allowed?

Thanks,
Stuart Imokawa

Seems like every year someone tries to corrupt the rules of this
contest.  I have never seen a kayak fisherman who is not serious about
the sport they enjoy.  With this seriousness there is also honesty and
integrity.  If someone shows up with a guitar shark or bat ray to the
weight station at Shamrocks fishing charters or tries to bend the rules
in any other way they will be soundly laughed off the premises.

:smt064 i think we had better ask him specifically about sharks to be sure.  i think a guitar shark is too similar to a ray..

This is not at all clear in their flyer.

Nor is it clear among emplyees of the shop what the rules are apparently, as the people I talked to today could care less.

I don't care.  I'm not fishing bat rays nor am I fishing for sharks, so it is no big deal to me, however, they had better be far more clear on their entry form.

The rules CLEARLY state largest legal fish wins.  If they don't want sharks/skates/rays then they had better revise there entry.

Some jerkwad (certainly not me, lets just be clear here) would have an excellent legal argument if he was refused the prize for a ray.

If you have rules in mind, they need to be in print.

Not everything is black and white ...

Who cares what the rules say?  Follow your conscience.  At the end of the day, that's all that counts.

Sure,

Like I said, I'm fishing for halibut with the hopes of winning.

But the US is black and white.  We are a litigous society.  I was merely pointing out that you ought to have the rules spelled out clearly.

If you don't want rays, just say so, it isn't hard.

Hmm,

I got a devils advocate bug going....

Ok, no rays or sharks?  What about all the pansies using cut or dead bait for fish.

Real anglers only use artificials.....

See what can happen if it isn't spelled out?

Dang, I'm really coming off as a jerk in these posts, but really, I just want everything to be layed out in the open.

You're a bass fisherman, right?  Say you pull a 10# female right off her spawning bed.  Do you keep it?  Why not?  The rules say your can.  The world is NOT black and white.

Real men JIG for salmon.  We don't YO-YO.

Molbasser ... just busting your chops.  Let's drink a beer together at the apres tourney bbq.  You can wash down some of my derby winning butt with it.   :smt005

I'm surprised there hasn't been more smack talk leading up to the derby.

Absolutely, we should drink beer together.

I have thick skin....

10# LMB of the bed......Hmmmmm I do have a space on my wall.....

Honestly, I just want the rules spelled out.

A ~$800 prize is on the line and people can get a little crazy over that.

I have a yak, so it would just be gravy to me.

I will repeat, I am fishing halibut, I will be wearing tie dye and will drink beer with all others at the BBQ celebrating my new prowler.

I am a notorious smack talker with my SoCal club but I am new up here and need to "read the room" before I start saying that you all suck.

Glad to hear we are all loosening up and starting to have some fun amongst our fellow kayak anglers.  :beer2

Brian,
If I didn't have 2 little ones, I'd be there with you, pole in one hand, beer in the other.

Mol,
I know you weren't around last year, but there was a similar debate a year ago.  Those who fished last year know the gentleman's rules of the tourney.  Those who are entering for the first time, I totally understand
the confusion.  I'm disappointed that this has to get re hashed AGAIN.

AGREE 100%.

Last year I had suggested to raffle off the yak instead of biggest sportfish.  Why?  Because there was some serious slander from last year's derby when Chuck won AND 2 yrs ago, when I lucked into the winner's circle.  It was pretty ugly with allegations about cheating, etc.
Don't want to go into details, but I sure hope the same person doesn't start whining again.

Overall, everyone still liked the thrill of winner bringing home the yak, so out went the raffle idea.

Stuart

I'm the most layed back guy you all have ever met, so you can count on me not complaining at all.

I also am a scorching hot stick on a yak...

You better get busy getting your cameras ready to take my picture with my new yak.

Corrupt the rules? Bend the rules?

Where in the rules does it say no sharks or rays?

This guy is coming off like you'd be made to look like an idiot at the derby, when in fact the rules are not clear. And laughed off the premises? What, a "real" kayakfisherman would never target sharays from a 'yak?

I must not be a real fisherman then.

OK, I'm done whining. The Heat lost. Today sucks.
