Had a great flotilla of yaks up for the weekend with Kevin, John, Hana, and Fred in town.  Combined with me and Chris that made 6 yaks on the water.  I made first class bait early on Sat. and we trolled until everything was dead.  Easily the worst fishing of the season for me a Mendo...the bite was DEAD.  We caught nada after a severe pounding of the water.  The wake board idiots are starting to be out in numbers, which made a dead morning just that much more painful.  We had one boat get ridiculously close.

I also fished the morning on Sunday with Joel and John for nada again.  The wind was blowing pretty good too.  My highlight was the lunch Leah made me and John while we pimped his ride.  Unfortunately, the bbq oysters were the only aquatic life to suffer this weekend.   :smt089

Good company as always, and Joel provided PLENTY of entertainment.  My turn to head south, hopefully will get more fish next time.

Howdy Sean,

When I fished for stripers on the East Coast, I did more night fishing for them at this time of the year, through mid-summer. That really helped to cut down on the excessive boat traffic problem. It also seemed that new moon phases and full moon phases were tops. Have you ever tried that on Mendo? (Is it legal there?) Large, black topwater plugs (Rebels and such) provided some of my best action. I had to make sure that I gave the lure a nice and steady retrieve so that the fish could home in on it easily. The fish not only seemed bigger, they often were bigger at night.

Better luck next time.

Night fishing is legal, I'll have to give that a try.  It would be fun anyways.  I stayed out once before after dark and a TON of bats came out and were zooming all over...it was very cool.

I fish hogan during the summer and its a blast to see the schools of shad under the lights and the stripers, crappie, bass catch pigging out.

Hey Sean - thanks again for hanging out with us at Mendo. It was still fun despite lack of hook-ups. I think John had the best time - all he talked about was your wife's cooking :smt002

Sean,

Thanks for showing me the ropes this weekend.  I had a great time on the water and my family really enjoyed the lake.

RE:  night fishing, I did read something about getting off the lake by sunset...

My highlight of the weekend was counting the number of guys & little kids walking around the camp sites sporting their mullet hair-dos  :metal

catsup & mustard-stained tank tops were standard issue clothing of the weekend  :smt109

THEY were definitely out in force this weekend  :smt035 yeeeee-haw :beat

Next time you guys come up I'll have to show you the non-trash side of Ukiah.  Its actually a realy nice little town...but the NASCAR crowd is definetely out some of the times.  Walmart after 9:30 at night is down right spooky! :smoke

Any walmart during peak hours gets wierd.  Mine turns into little manilla...
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
