Braid. (Don't use it often through.... prefer the simplicity of the DD6.)

Wire, because they came with it. After this season I might switch over.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I was thinking the same.  The unscientific guess being that the wire noise may spook the salmon... although it didn't seem to spook lake trout...

I don't like the wire noise.  Braid all day, and its not for the fish ,it's for me.

Braid cuts, wire flips.... Hang up once and you'll understand why I run braid and have a knife handy ( open and ready) :smt006
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Yeah... I don't think the fish mind the wire hum (some even say it attracts them) but it sure bothered me before I switched to braid. I still got the hum sometimes with braid, but less frequently.

Whether you go with braid or cable, you should make sure you set your downrigger's brake/drag loose enough that it'll pay out line if your ball gets snagged. That way you have time to turn around, paddle back over your ball, and (hopefully) free it up without leaving a ball and 50+ feet of braided line on the lake/ocean floor.

Braid!!!

And have a knife that you can access to cut it instantly, if needed.  A few years ago a whale hit my downrigger line. I cut it within a couple of seconds. If it had lasted a couple more seconds, I would have for sure gotten dumped, and that whale might still be towing my kayak around...
