Stuart, Amadeo, & I were out off Moss/SC last week & were treated to the Orca show.   

There was a pod of orcas harassing a gray whale.  Amadeo eased up & we tried to snap a few pictures off.  It was the first time I've ever seen Orcas, definitely a cool experience.

Happened to me about 2 years ago. A pod was working a baby whale. I was glad I was in a PB and not my kayak. As great as it would be to see from a yak the idea of them possibly using me as a training dummy for their young is a little unsettling

Up at dux a few years ago I had a solo female come to me and the next week a male The female pingponged from boat to boat like she was looking for fish

Maybe the next year I saw the beginning of a slaughterfest a mile or so outside Moss and my warm fuzzy feelings toward kws went away permanently

One tinfoil-hat segment of the kayaking fraternity believes that the two kayakers that were supposedly killed by Great Whites off of Malibu were actually molested by Orcas. This is the only known case of a fatal GWS attack on kayakers in CA. If not the world.

The boyfriend's body was never found. The girlfriend's was, and did have significant GWS bites. But there just isn't any history of a GWS hitting two humans in one attack, so where's the boyfriend? One theory was that Orcas "played" with the kayakers, to the point that the people were separated from their boats. He drowned. she was had a couple chunks taken out of her by a GWS, pre or post-mortem is not reported.

Needless to say, I'd make a concerted effort to not look like a toy, if Orcas were about

Every one of those plastic yaks looks like a big bathtub toy to me, I bet over time the orcas will come to realize this too

I have had a Grey Whale come along side (HMB) my Kayak which was enough to get the heart rate up. Just seeing those pictures of the Orcas with the PB in background makes me pause. What would that be like seeing those dorsal fins heading in my direction? Adrenaline plus!

Yes. But there are loud splashy toys that look like they are all sorts of fun to play with, and then there are the quiet, still toys that look rather boring. If I were in a group of kayakers that were approached by Orcas, guess which kind of toy I'd try to be?
