BTW, while bat ray is quite edible (I'd eat one for a kayak for sure) skate absolutely is NOT edible.  I'd read that people eat skate elsewhere, so I tried a skate caught out of berkeley - bled out and cooked much like a bat ray, it tasted so vile I threw it out.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down

Superior, they said, never gives up her dead

I suppose it depends on the skate species.  The ones we used to catch up in Washington were quite tasty.  Skate wings have the consistency and taste of scallops.

Yep.  A lot of scallops are in fact cookie cutter skate.  They are quite tasty.

Bat ray is used for "scallops" down south.

Hey, I'm an outsider new to this tourney so I have no idea what "agreements" have been made in the past.

I'm gonna take the devils advocate position of what is on the flyer is the rules.

Now, that said, I will be fishing just outside the harbor for halibut.

But, the rules are the rules.  I would not be disapointed to see a ray win it.

Dear Fellow Yakers:

I call Mark and asked him to call me at Home to see if
Sharks, Rays, Etc.. are on the list of fish that qualify. Last years Yak was won
with a nice Halibut, caught under X conditions at Davenport.
Last year the same topic was brought up. Some Yakers felt it was a little risky, if you  chum for Sharks where they're  fishing.  I eat Sharks and most things except, for Chilled Monkey Brains. :smt005

I just today filled my application out at the shop.

I talked to the nice lady at the counter and asked a few pertinent questions...

Where can I fish?  Anywhere.
Really?  Yes.
I just need to be at the weigh in, and don't need to check in?  Yep.
Scouts honor on start time?  Absolutely.

Wow.  I must say I was impressed with the laid back organization.

I also mentioned that I was discussing this "edible/ray/shark" thing online.

Her quote:

"Those guys need to fish more and spend less time on message boards"!!

I snickered out loud.

Honestly, they at the shop (that I talked to) just want to see the biggest legal fish win.  They don't care if it is edible.

BTW, I saw the winners yak.  Bright yellow prowler 13'.

I want that boat.

In light of Molbasser's clarification of Kayak Connection's Derby Rules, for those wishing to go after Bat Rays w/ me at Elkorn Slough, I propose we meet at the same spot and go out together as a group. This way we can keep in touch and just bring in the largest Bat Ray, rather than several people bringing in Bat Rays.

For those who plan to go after sharks, may I suggest the same thing? It'll be safer in numbers and alot more fun!

This should be interesting...

Elric,
"Bat Ray Fest" won't count towards the derby.  You or anyone else who tries to BEND/CORRUPT the rules will get "laughed off the premises".

A bat ray would neither bend nor corrupt the rules.  As printed.

If there are top secret rules that we are supposed to know, they sure aren't plain to the common public that has just heard about this tourney.

I don't care one way or another, I just want the rules to be open and known to all.

The rules state CLEARLY "heaviest fish".  No mention of species is made.

I agree with Molbasser, the rules are printed and it could get nasty. This is what I was trying to prevent. I think next tourny will have a species list to circumvent this situation.

While I'm hoping they'll change the tourny to Saturdays...I'll toss in my two cents.

Give the kayak to whomever looks the best in their wetsuit.  I won't be there so the rest of you may have a chance.
