I just feel that I have to defend the "brown" man on such "off" casual statements made by "white" men. I KNOW you didn't "mean" anything by it.
I also know how the black man feels when always being accused of pulling the race card.
My post did sound "hostile" and i'm sorry for that, especially since I know that you are no way inclined.
So if MolBasser or anybody wants to bring in a Bat Ray or Blue Shark, then all is fair, but in the end, that fish should be eaten and I'll leave it at that.

There was no racial implications in anyones post but yours.

If you have an axe to grind, that's fine.

KZ is merely missinformed about the flavor of batray.  His only "issue" if you could even call it that is having a low opinion of the bat ray.

A FISH.

Read that again.

A FISH.

Human race had nothing to do with it.  Only people that insist on being the "victim" will bring race into an issue where it wasn't even relavent.

I don't want to be speaking for KZ, so I wont, but don't imply that someone is racist because of your insecurities.

Looks pretty clear on the entry.

Heaviest fish.

So there you have it.  You bring the heaviest fish in and you win.

Seeing as how it is out of the harbor I would have a hard time believing that bat ray would be targeted (just my ignorance of the fishery I guess).  I would think that you would have to go down to the slough to have a good shot at a big bat ray.

Seems more realistic that a halibut will win.

Yup - for the past 3 - 4 Derbys. The mighty Halibut always had  the podium  :smt038 IT sure would be nice to see some other fish take the crown this time around......like a monster King Fish  :kick ..............That will turn some heads  and impress the chicks :smt096

Let's stay friends here and drop the racial card. The reason I brought this post up was to try and avoid a nasty situation at the tourny. This is meant to be fun. What is considered edible fish varies from region to region, not  from race to race. I think that at the BBQ this year we should take a vote and clearly define the bounderies.

I would change the poll to include rays too, but I can't figure out how to add that to the poll. Any help on this?

With all due respect, I think it is a moot point.

There is no mention on the entry that the fish be "edible".  It clearly states that the heaviest fish wins.

You catch a fish, any fish on your yak that you paddled from shore and back, and it is the heaviest fish- you win.  Seems black and white (Uh, let's try plainly clear).

Just to put my 2 cents in, I think the term edible is the issue. I look at it more in terms of "sporting", with is of course a debatable term as well but follow my logic a bit.

Bat Rays and Sharks are considered by most to be not very sporting because they are very abundant (bat rays) or easy to attract to you (sharks) those making the pursuit of these species less of a challenge (again I am speaking in general terms here). Landing a big fish is hard no matter what type of fish it is, however getting that fish on your line is easier for some species (bat rays, sharks, kingfish, Big Sur Rockfish) and more difficult for others (salmon, halibut, WSB) therefore the difficult species to get on your line are more "valuable" in a sporting sense than the easy to get on your line fish. I think for most of us it is about the sport of getting the fish on the line and landing it and not how good it is when/if you eat it.

For those mathematically inclined think of it this way,

difficulty to hook (1-10) + difficulty to land (1-10) = total sporting value

Sharks - 2 + 10 = 12
WSB - 10 + 8 = 18

Therefore the WSB is "sportier" than the bat ray.

Sure, sure.....

That is all well and good, but the rules are as plain as the nose on my face.  So........For this tourney at least, it is moot.

If batrays are so plentiful and easy to catch in SC (I live here) why are people not posting catching them more?  They fight like frieght trains.  They are absolute reel spooling beasts. You don't have to eat them to enjoy the sport of catching one.

You want a sleigh ride?  Hook a 50# bat ray.  That will give you a sleigh ride, and no guarantee that you boat it either.

Hey Bill ever think making it big at black jack?

"difficulty to hook (1-10) + difficulty to land (1-10) = total sporting value"

Low card (-1) + High card(+1)=  :smt023
At least thats my understanding of card counting.

Oh yea almost forgot.
My view on the original post
Batties=no
Sharks=no

Don't we go through this argument every year in Santa Cruz? The rules were created back when there were, what, 3 people in each event? It was set up as a fun, relaxed thing that was supposed to bring folks together with a common interest, as well as gathering revenue for a good cause. With the rules as they are, sharks should be allowed, end of argument. If a ray wins this thing next week, I think that there might need to be a species specific amendment for September though. Otherwise we'll all be out there with big dead baits & mr whitey will think he hit the shrink wrapped dude-snack jackpot.

Totally my bad for bringing up the racial issue on this event that is suppose to bring revenue to a worthy cause.
Maybe I do have issues to jump to eroneous conclusions - based upon my views of someone's post  :smt062  and for that I sincerely apologize - really.
I KNOW Erik is in no such way a racists and totally beg his forgiveness.
What was I thinking? :smt017

Now pass me that second helping of Bat Ray

No hard feelings here... we're all entitled to our opinions.

I might try a little of that bat ray if someone's got one cooking...
