I became obsessed with fish and fishing around the age of six. This is kind of surprising given that none of my friends or immediate family were anglers. Not only that, but my parents were strict vegetarians so fishing was forbidden. I kept pursuing it relentlessly and eventually they accepted that I could fish catch-and-release. I had no fishing partners, and no mentorship until my grandfather taught me the basics of fly fishing around age 13. Unfortunately we only got to fish together once a year.

My fishing compulsion was put on hold for long periods of time while I pursued other interests, but it was never too far beneath the surface. In the past I had two major complaints about fishing: not getting much exercise, and not catching many fish. Happily, kayak fishing has remedied both these problems.

My dad started taking me fishing at 3 years old and I have been addicted ever since. Now I'm passing the addiction down to both of my boys
