I was busy getting skunked at the barge canal in west sac this morning.  I was sitting in the middle of the channel across from the launch ramp facing to the west.  Nobody else any anywhere... I thought.  Well, I was wrong.  There was one guy sculling that ran into the back of my kayak.

And yes, it scared the crap out of me.  He was very sorry and said he saw me and knew I was there.  If he knew I was there then why'd he hit me?

Furthermore, if your alone and sitting backwards (by that I mean looking in the opposite direction your going) it seems to me you're going to hit stuff.

i saw you, then turned the other way, so I could run into you.  Good thing you did not get hurt or hurt him.

some people dont belong behind the wheel of a car nor be a captain of a boat.  :smt002

That does not surprise me. I've nearly been run over by those guys on Lexington, where they go really fast and act like they own the place. One of my older son's friends got hit by one of them (he was a rower in another boat) and ended up with a huge scar down his side. I'm sure they can do some serious damage, both to kayaks and kayakers.

This is one of my biggest fears while on my kayak and also why I wear a bright orange bucket hat. I've wondered about an air horn? It will certainly get somebody's attention but at the risk of scaring the shit out of them, in turn possibly pissing them off. At that point your a sitting duck for any retaliation from an angry boater.

I want to build a retractable flag pole to attach to my crate. Something I can twist to raise and lower quickly if need be. I've been thinking about a cheap walmart paddle for the pole. Any one got better ideas?

A whistle is essential, IMHO. Be sure you can access it quickly and get the kind that works when wet.

Some ppl just don't watch out or have etiquette I take my tracker n kayak out all the time n swear ppl just go way too fast in narrow waterways. Once I was towing a 22' boat who was broken for 2 days back to the Petaluma marina @3mph n some A$$Hole in his center console blast by me and the other boat kickin a huge wake nearly causing a collision.  If we had gotten back at the marina at the same time I would of exchanged words for sure.

I was drifting by the opening at ARW when I saw a scull coming from the launch direction. Kept watch and noticed he never looked where he was headed. When he got close enough I yelled at him (on your right). He then started yelling at me for being in his way -- I just yelled at him that he was the one going backwards. He shut up. I was ready to grab his oar and let him overturn. I also noticed he was not wearing a PFD.

It's always entertaining when folks come waaay too close then wave a friendly hello, then wonder why I don't wave back.

Part of the fun of being on a silent kayak is people watching.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
